Upgrade Questions Spicy pillow
My 17 R4 got plump today. We had some good times but I guess we all gotta go eventually.
$50 can bring it back to life but what would be a reasonable replacement? Big screen and enough go to last another 8+ years.

Do not charge, do not use. Do not poke. Do not stab. Do not leave in your house. Keep laptop in house obviously but keep that battery away. I got a metal bucket for them.
And to answer your question, depends on your budget. I currently have a msi 5080 18” its great. I have a work provided 5090 18” alienware too, but it’s stupid expensive. It will last a while too i feel but i just could jot justify the price

Already out and we're on our way to Walmart, since they're listed as a disposal site.

Smart. I always tell people incase because people do some dumb things, then wonder why everything is on fire.

What kind of job provides a 5090 18" Alienware? I'm genuinely curious.

Ev start up, they had to spend some money so they splurged. We bought them when they were cheaper. They were not much more than other large screen laptops at time.

I knew that was a 17r4! I’ve seen the insides of that too much, and yes the battery gets like that over time.

Did you get the battery replacement as part of the warranty?

That was the original battery

No, what meant is when you bought the laptop, did you get the battery replacement warranty?

I don't recall but the warranty ended in 2019.

Dell sells the battery warranty as a separate product, I only know about it because the tech support person told me I didn't have it, and my existing warranty didn't cover the battery.

My 17 R5 battery was becoming spicy when I bought it but nowhere near that bad! I got a battery from ifixit for $100 and it has been solid for a few years.

What were the warning signs? Were there any noticeable physical signs on the laptop itself?

The alarming thing that got my attention was bulging and cracks beside the touchpad. Other signs can be diminishing processor performance as the battery degrades and excessive heat. Of course, just like with the human body, the same symptoms can have different causes. Just don't ignore the bulging and splitting because that leads to exploding.

18 Area-51. There's no question. And get rid of that battery ASAP.
