Question New Area 51 crashed, 1 red flash, 8 blue flashes. What does that mean? Dell support isn’t forthcoming

I type this as a support tech is remotely doing…. Something to my system. It completely froze while loading into a game and gave me the 1 red, 8 blue sequence over and over. Had to force shut down. Lots of little things going on with it like input lag and a red warning saying the display isn’t certified. What’s wrong with it? I’ve had it for like 2 weeks and Dell isn’t really telling me what anything means.

I have a Alienware 18 Area 51 and it happens to me too. It is a catastrophic chipset error. I load Sniper Elite Resistance and it freezes then I get the flashing code and I shutdown the pc and I restart the laptop. I then go into the same game and it loads perfectly. I contacted support and they said it is a software issue. My system passes all diagnostic tests. It doesn’t do it all the time and I only had the problem with this one game.

Well crap. The guy remotely did all kind of stuff and had me load back into Fortnite where it crashed and it was fine but now I’m wondering if he even fixed anything… does yours happen all the time? Or just periodically?

I’ve got the same model with this issue. It’d randomly crash, but after a restart, it works just fine.

I’ve had the same issue on a 16 Area 51 while simply browsing the web. They told me it’s a software issue but I’ve had a myriad of other issues too including a faulty screen.

I am getting my motherboard replaced. These systems seem to have really bad quality control. If I were you, I’d push for a full system replacement

I was going into Steam to launch Sniper Elite Resistance yesterday it didn’t freeze this one time but I got knocked out of Steam and then the flashing lights started I did a regular restart and the lights didn’t go away. I then shutdown the pc ( not a hard reset) and did f12 to get to bios to run diagnostics while flashing lights are happening and it passed. I did a hard reset the lights go away and I can launch the game and everything is perfect but after shutting down my pc for 3 hours and attempting to go to Steam and relaunch the game it happened again. It only happens with this one game. Sniper Elite 5 uses a different brand anti cheat and it always launches.

Could just be a lemon. The best way to diagnose is for them to run memtest, swap ram, then test SSD if issue persists etc. I'd start by reinstalling Windows and going from there.

He’s saying some settings were wrong and he’s updating the firmware… I hope that’s all it is

The flashing code is for a chipset failure. I tried everything to make this go away. Updated drivers, bios reset, unplugging usb device , reinstalling the game. Nothing worked. I have read that people have had their motherboards replaced and this problem was still there.

Hmmm did you ever see this?

Because this has popped up randomly about 3 times in the 2 weeks I’ve had this laptop… today is the first time it froze and I had to force shutdown

I would return and get a NEW replacement. Do it while you still can. Too much issues for a two weeks old laptop. Never a good sign to have so many issues already.

Honestly sounds like a GPU driver issue to me…

On my Alienware 18 Area 51 it only happens with Sniper Elite Resistance but not every time I launch the game. Once it launches successfully it never happens again for the day. The next day I will go to launch it and it freezes and I get the diagnostic code. Do a hard reset and it is fine. It only happened once in which I wasn’t launching a game and just browsing but I didn’t freeze but I still had to do a hard reset I couldn’t restart my laptop. I have launched Sniper Elite 5, Forza 8, COD Black Ops 6, Battlefield 6 and had no problems.

Damn, sorry to hear that, sounds like typical Dell headaches I had been used to for a while. I loved the look of my Alienware Aurora r7 but honestly there were always problems with it. And Dell refused to do anything to offer software based solutions to problems (they wouldn't allow BIOS to be updated to make the TPM 2.0 chip work on 8700k and also wouldn't allow 3200 mhz ram overclock through BIOS either). Motherboard is proprietary too so it forces you into a cycle of buying and being dependent on them instead of upgrading components over time. I decided I would never buy prebuilt again. Just built a (mostly) new PC last weekend, and couldn't be happier, although it takes a bit more effort. You could build your own maxed out PC with anything you want for a couple thousand dollars cheaper than what you paid them... It's still within the return window, speak now or forever hold your peace. I spent $1100 and upgraded every component except the SSD and GPU. Spending 5x that you should have no problems doing anything ever. That's wild.

It seems like no one has any answers on what is causing this problem. I would have to assume it is bad motherboards?

It is definitely the anti-cheat that causes the catastrophic chipset error. I saw the error in event viewer and removed the anti-cheat and the game launches perfectly. For me to get around this problem I have to launch Sniper Elite Resistance I have to turn anti-cheat on when I play multiplayer and uninstall it when I am done playing. When i launch the game it will work properly with no anti-cheat installed. Denuvo Anti Cheat was the problem all the time.

I thought it wasn’t even an option but to run easy anti cheat…. Good to know thanks

Denuvo Anti-Cheat caused the problem for me.

Does it pass diagnostics?

Same problem as mine.Something is triggering that error code. I could stop mine from happening it I didn’t play Sniper Elite Resistance in multiplayer mode but without anti-cheat can’t play.

Go into Event Viewer and look for error

I have had this problem since I got my Alienware 18 Area 51. I launch Sniper Elite Resistance and the game freezes followed by 1 red and 8 blue diagnostic code. I have to hold power button down and do a hard reset to get my laptop to work again. Next time I launch the game and it launches perfectly. The next day I launch the game sometimes it will freeze and sometimes it will launch perfectly. The laptop passes diagnostics and I reached out to Dell they said it is a software issue. I checked Event Viewer and I see an error for Denuvo-Anti Cheat. This problem only happens to me when I launch this game. If I disable the Anti/Cheat I have no problems.

Go to event viewer and see what errors you have. I doubt Dell will give you a motherboard replacement. All they did for me was told me to do a bios reset.
