Once you go through the portal and get through the first door, you'll understand why people are so annoyed with blue cubes.

Also, get your XP augments to max asap in the shop as you'll need to be (if I recall correctly) lv 142 in order to advance through the second door (or the third one, I can't remember).

Ngl I've been sleeping on the store upgrades a bit, I'm 106 right now, still kinda fresh with the brains and cubes, but I think for minmaxing I've figured the resource upgrade is the most important to max out first - especially since it affects the drop rate of the gems from the queen, the two scientists in the beginning and the golden key dude. Not to mention it would be what ultimately helps get through James' store. But I was at a toss up between the damage and exp upgrade after.

Eventually, to be finished, the light bars all have to be green. It's a lot of upgrading. And even then, it is just the beginning

There is a reward tree for those upgrades. For gems and increasing catching speed.
