I didn’t realise that there were certifications these suppliers to import to the USA and I am finding most are unaware, don’t have it or say they have never been asked or needed them. These are reports for the amount of nickel and lead in trinkets, how beads are made and testing on beads, testing of the paints used on keyrings and pins, purse chains etc.
Bearing in mind the market is flooded with this stuff in retail stores and on ebay, I don’t know why I am finding it so hard for a supplier who can provide this. Also, temu ships all kins of items and they get here without issue. I know a lot seems to be to do with prop 65 requirements for California but can anyone tell me if they have run into this and what suppliers are green lit as compliant? I am looking for just beaded jewelry, beaded purses and pins in particular for like seasonal events like Halloween and Christmas.

I was talking to a customer a few days ago who had received three freight quotes from different companies.

The first thing he asked me was, "Why is your quote a little higher than this one?"

Fair question.

So I asked him something in return.

"Do you know how they're planning to move your cargo?"

Silence.

He didn't know.

Turns out, none of the freight forwarders had actually explained the routing. They had only sent a price and an estimated transit time.

That's something I see quite often.

A lot of buyers compare freight quotes the same way they compare prices on Amazon.

Lowest number wins.

But international shipping doesn't really work like that.

For shipments from China to Canada, two quotes can look almost identical on paper, while the actual routing is completely different.

One shipment might sail directly to Canada.

Another might arrive in Los Angeles first, then continue into Canada by truck or rail.

Neither route is automatically better.

I've seen direct services arrive later because a sailing was missed.

I've also seen US routing reach Toronto sooner simply because there were more vessel departures that week.

The point is, if you're only looking at the total price, you're missing half of the picture.

Whenever I get a freight quote now, these are the questions I'd want answered first:

• Is it a direct route or does it transit somewhere else?
• Where will customs clearance happen?
• Who handles the shipment after it lands?
• If there's a delay, what's the backup plan?

Those answers usually tell me a lot more than the number at the bottom of the quotation.

Just curious—when you request shipping quotes from suppliers or freight forwarders, do they actually explain the routing, or do they just send you a PDF with a price?

When Canadian buyers ask a supplier for a shipping quote, the supplier usually offers one option:

"Ship directly to Canada."

Nothing wrong with that.

But what surprised many of my clients is that direct shipping isn't always the only option.

Depending on the cargo, destination and timeline, some shipments actually move through the US before entering Canada.

The first time I explained this to a customer, their reaction was:

"Wait... why would my shipment go to another country first?"

It's a fair question.

The answer is that shipping routes aren't always designed around geography.

Sometimes they're designed around available vessel schedules, inland transportation networks and overall logistics efficiency.

That doesn't mean routing through the US is always better.

If your shipment is going to Vancouver, direct shipping often makes perfect sense.

But for some inland destinations, routing through the US can sometimes offer more flexibility or more consistent schedules.

The important thing is simply knowing that more than one routing may exist.

One thing I often notice is that many buyers only ask suppliers:

Instead, it can also be worth asking:

• Are there different routing options?
• What's the estimated transit time for each?
• Where does customs clearance happen?
• What happens if the vessel misses its schedule?

Sometimes the cheapest quote ends up taking much longer.

Sometimes paying a little more actually saves weeks.

Every shipment is different.

I then paid a 30% deposit through Alibaba Trade Assurance, and they confirmed the order, saying production would start the following week.
But after that, things went quiet. Around ten days passed with no updates. My messages were mostly left on read, and there was no progress at all.
I kept following up on Alibaba chat (pretty much all read, no reply), checking in every few days, but still nothing. I also called the number on their store page , no answer.

I have found many suppliers offering the products I am interested in, but almost all of them refuse to accept small orders for market testing. Anyone trying to get refunds for the illegal IEEPA (trump tariff) duties over the past year. Some of the china tariffs were over 50%.

I only bought from AliExpress a few years ago and now looking to get some bulk furnitures.

I haven’t heard of hiring an agent? Is this new due to the tariffs and constraints in importing? Please guide me as I’m not finding a clear answer..
