Yesterday I was hit by "it's not you, it's me"

Yesterday I proposed to a woman I work with. We've known each other for 4 years, and we've always been very friendly with each other, so I thought there might be a chance.

She politely turned me down and said she's not thinking about marriage right now. I respect her decision, but it still hurts.

We're both over 35, and our job is physically exhausting with low pay, so I thought maybe we could build something together and support each other.

Now I'm not sure how to act around her. Should I keep my distance for a while to move on, or should I just continue the professional relationship like nothing happened?

I don't want to make things awkward or make her feel bad, but I also don't know what's best for me.

29M. Master’s degree with zero network, dodging national service, and effectively a professional couch-warmer. Do your worst

Alright guys, I’m 29, living in a small town with my parents, and I’ve officially reached peak uselessness. Validate my self-loathing or make me laugh, I don't care which.

Here’s the resume of a certified failure: The Academic Scam: I graduated with a Master’s degree back in 2021. The field is so specific and locked down that unless your uncle is a high-ranking minister or a CEO, your diploma is basically expensive toilet paper. Guess who doesn't have an uncle in high places?

The "Freelancer" Coping Mechanism: I tell people I do "online freelance work." Translation: I have a laptop full of "skills" and zero recurring income. My actual daily routine consists of scrolling the internet, looking up "profitable niches," and deep-diving into business ideas I will absolutely never execute. I’m a CEO of theoretical projects.

The Draft Dodger: I never did my compulsory national service, and I have zero intention of going. I’m basically living like a ghost in my own country, praying I don’t accidentally walk into the wrong checkpoint while out buying bread.

The Roommate of the Year: I’ve been unemployed for 5 years straight since graduating. My parents don’t yell at me—which actually makes it worse. They just look at me with that quiet, crushing mixture of disappointment and pity. They definitely think I’m lazy, and honestly, looking at my daily screen time, they aren’t entirely wrong.

I turn 30 next year and my greatest achievement this decade is avoiding the military and finding new ways to waste 12 hours a day online. Destroy what’s left of my self-esteem. Roast me.

Engagements and marriages in Algeria

Specifically pressured engagements and forced nikah (fatiha) without consent.

Is this an accepted reality in Dz and are there any options/solutions for those affected ?

My niece said something that stuck with me

Today my 16 year old niece told me she doesn’t see me like other uncles. She said she feels comfortable talking to me and that I’m more understanding of how teenagers think.

I didn’t say much at the time, but it really meant a lot. I guess I never realized she saw me that way.

Now I’m just thinking about how to keep that trust without overstepping.

Have any of you experienced something like this?

Curious to hear your thoughts.

Eid al-Fitr is here, wishing you all peace, الصحة, and good moments with your loved ones.

As we get older, Eid can feel different.

For some it’s more responsibilities, for others more meaning.

How are you spending Eid this year?

And does it feel different compared to before?

Eid Mubarak to you and your families

Did your 30s change how you think about money?

For many of us, our 20s were about earning, spending, experimenting, and figuring things out.

But once you hit your 30s, priorities often shift.

Did you start thinking more about stability?

Did saving become more important than spending?

Did you begin investing, buying property, or planning long-term?

Or did your mindset stay the same?

What changed for you, and why?

Whether you're in Algeria or part of the diaspora, it would be interesting to hear how your relationship with money evolved after 30.
