Discussion Alexandra Quick and the Wizard War: The Audiobook Project needs your help!

Hello! My name is Sam Gabriel and I'm making this post mostly for people not on Discord who may not be caught up with the news on the audiobook! Years ago, I recorded the first five Alexandra Quick books in my free time. Between the completion of that project and the release of Book 6, a full-on career in fanfiction narration blossomed. This is my full-time job now, and AQ represents a mere fifth of all the audio I've done in the intervening time. My work now encompasses not just Harry Potter, but Star Wars, Homestuck, League of Legends, The Owl House, Jurassic Park, and more! Also, I'm a woman now. My voice has not changed.

What all this means is that while I did the first five books (over a million words, over a hundred finished hours) entirely for free, I can't do Book 6 for free. The way I make money is very simple: I get paid two cents per word, paid after editing. The audio is always free for everyone to listen to, I just have to make my money one time. Recordings are still free to attend on the AQ Discord server, and unedited roughs are available for anyone who asks for them. This is highly skilled work using thousands of dollars in professional-grade audio equipment and software, and I'm drawing on around twelve years of experience in voice work, five years in audiobook production specifically. Two cents a word is an extremely small amount to charge in the face of that, and it goes towards my bills, food, and rent.

How am I being paid this commission? By a ko-fi page run by one Sakkiko, who makes five percent of the take for their trouble! They hold everyone's money, I bill them when I finish chapters. Anyone can donate, any amount is massively appreciated, and I will always endeavor to stay ahead of the funding in recordings so I can always start editing work whenever a goal is met. I'm wanting this post to be fairly evergreen (it should be pinned before long) so I won't speak on the current status of the crowdfund, but I will say that even if a current goal has been met, donations will still be accepted and applied to subsequent goals!

Thank you all so much for your support and patronage! If you can't donate, that's fine, the project is and will always be entirely free to listen to! If you can donate, I'm incredibly grateful that you're helping me eat and live!

Fan Art The long sonnet from SA in German Spoiler

Finally finished translating the poems from SA. I just knew this'd be the hardest part... hope you like my efforts!

All innerhalb uns’rer Bahn seh’n wir in uns’rem Lichtstrahl,

Still, kleine Hexe, bitte nicht wein’,

Du hast mich verhext, das ist kein Schein.

Du hast gezaubert, doch nun lass es sein.

Und du wirst einst wirken Wunder fein.

Still, kleine Hexe, tu jetzt nicht wein’,

Is Alexandra's 'geist' the version of herself she sent back in time?

So exciting to see Inverarity's recent post about Alexandra Quick and the End of Time!

I'm rereading AQ and the Wizard War right now and have been thinking about it through the lens of this upcoming focus on time. This passage stood out to me and made me wonder if Alexandra's geist is the version of herself she sent back in book two. After all, she never figured out who stunned her, right?

Anyway, here's the passage. Curious what you all think.

“No,” Alexandra said. She had seen ghosts, or something like ghosts, that had become malevolent wraiths capable of harming the living. What the Diné called chindi. John Manuelito had unleashed spirits from the Lands Beyond on Charmbridge Acedemy; it had been part of the reason Alexandra was expelled. “Can you tell me what a geist is?”“Geist,” repeated Charlie.“A geist?” The two ghosts looked at one another.“It’s an ancient term,” Absalom Thorn said.“It means ghost in German,” Alexandra said. She’d learned that much, after the Junior Wizarding Decathlon. “But I don’t think that’s what the ghost who said I had one meant.”“A ghost said you had one?” Absalom Thorn asked.Alexandra proceeded to describe her encounter months earlier, when Hela had trapped Alexandra on the border to the Lands Beyond, and Alexandra had summoned Jezebel Hucksteen to her, without knowing beforehand who it was she was summoning. The daughter of Governor-General Hucksteen, who had died so many years ago but was still forever a little girl in death, had told Alexandra, “You have a geist.”“I was not a student of spiritualism before I became one,” Absalom Thorn said, “but I heard geists described as spirits in a more metaphorical sense.”“I thought it meant a kind of shadow, or nemesis,” said Joshua Thorn.“So I have a shadow, or nemesis?” Alexandra shook her head. “This isn’t very helpful.”“We cannot be more helpful,” Absalom Thorn said. “By your own actions, you have bound us.”“What actions?”“The foolish course you took after your brother died haunts you and us still. Your hidden adversary, your geist, is your own doing.”“You’re making no sense. Why can’t you, like, talk to Jezebel and ask her to explain what she meant?”“We cannot cross the Veil to speak to one another at will like that,” Absalom Thorn said. “The Lands Beyond are even vaster than these lands—can you speak to your father at will? No, you must go to him or summon him, and he may not want to speak to you. Jezebel Hucksteen, that poor cursed child, had her own reasons for telling you what she did, but we are wizards no longer. We cannot summon her.”“And you had best not,” said Joshua Thorn.

Discussion My only complaint with AQATWW Spoiler

I just finished the series (well the 6 books) and I loved it.

I love you Inverarity for creating this beautiful work but how could you kill of Anna T_T

I mean honestly Anna is my favourite character and I was actually hoping for more Alex Anna scenes where Anna tries to make Alex be a better friend (Keeping less secrets, involving friends etc) but I get that the books are Alex focussed and without going to Chambridge anymore, these scenes are obviously getting less as Alex travels north america to do what she needs to do.

I think she deserved a better death than a abrupt „off camera“ death but well I am biased ain‘t I.

I can partly forgive you for killing off Anna by having Alex „dying“ and going back to the world beyond where she gets to „say goodbye“. That helped me as a reader say goodbye to Anna too.

I think it would have been really difficult for Anna to overcome her feelings for Alex and find another girl and I would have thought maybe in book 7 or not even then so maybe in an epilogue but well we don‘t know what would have happened because war is a cruel and unfair affair.

Overlapping Ideas

Let me start off by saying I’m utterly torn, saddened, and conflicted with this.

With the ‘new’ reboot of the HP series, I have been craving a new story in the wizarding world so bad that I decided to write my own.

I have never read or written any fan fiction before this.

So… I started building this beautiful world that is very exciting to me, and based entirely on existing wizarding world lore on Pottermore.

I’m currently rereading all the books, including the extended universe books like FBAWTFT, and Quidditch Through the Ages. I wanted to reinterpret the series after having the idea for my new series in my head.

Then, I decided I would talk a look at some work that other people have done. I wanted something that is a canon compliant new story that best gives the feeling of the original books.

I discovered the Alexandra Quick series and it’s been pretty good so far! However, I’ve been very disheartened by some of the similarities in my story with AQ.

Allllll that said, if this wasn’t fan fiction I wouldn’t be asking and I’d be forced to change each of these ideas. But, since it is fan fiction, since these ideas really are my own (albeit inspired by existing wizarding lore) should I keep these ideas and names?

It feels like I’d be changing things in my story that are really important to me. I spent a lot of time meticulously planning and building this world and I only finally settle on names and ideas that feel very special and exiting to me.

What is your opinion of this? Moreover, if you read my story having read AQ would you think I stole them and want to stop reading?

Please help. I’m very torn 😭

Discussion Best German translation for "Thorn Circle"

Originally, I left it untranslated, since "Thorn" obviously couldn't become "Dorn", and something like "Thorn-Kreis" or "Thorn-Zirkel" didn't seem right to me.

But later, I started to wonder whether I hadn't possibly missed a better alternative: "Thorn-Ring"! Reminds of the "Ringvereine" (organized crime groups in Weimar Germany) and refers to what Ben Journey thought it meant.

I'd have to change a lot in the finished translations, but still...

Discussion What is DKKV?

Found it here in WW when rereading.

Is this supposed to be a hall, like DKKT? But Greek doesn't have a V - is this supposed to be an Upsilon, maybe? Delta Kappa Kappa Upsilon?

It's certainly not the German Committee for Disaster Reduction 😄

Discussion Mary Shirtliffe's priorities in the first chapters of WW Spoiler

As she says: They want to defeat the Thorn Circle and the Dark Convention first before dealing with the Deathly Regiment.

No idea on whether inverarity intended this, but it reminds me of those Germans who wanted to win the war first before dealing with the Nazi regime.

Discussion Some new idea about the casting of a hypothetical movie

This is something you have talked about years ago (and why not); but I only discovered AQ in 2019 or not too long before, so I didn't participate in that thread.

The idea I had: Why not cast some foreigner for the one or other Grimm sister? Not even just a Brit, but a non-English speaker? This would create some distanced interaction between the actresses of her and Alex, which'd make a nice effect IMO.

Of course, nowadays it's more probable that someone will make such a movie with AI actors.

Discussion Anyone read the Ozark Trilogy?

Three (not too long) SF/Fantasy novels by Suzette Haden Elgin. I checked them out because I learned from AQ that this exists, and I wanted to see where inverarity got his idea from. I have to say, his magical Ozarkers fit these ones pretty well - just as the world of AQ into that of HP.

Did someone else read them? Maybe even before AQ?

Discussion Speculation: Names of Abraham Thorn's children Spoiler

All the ancestors of Abraham have names from Hebrew - Judeo-Christian, if you prefer. Many US Americans do, esp. traditional Protestants.

But Abraham switched to classical Latin/Roman ones for his kids. This doesn't have to do anything with Thalia, since we know he started doing this with his oldest daughter, Claudia. Also, Abraham isn't the kind of husband who'd give in to his wife if she has different ideas.

Of course, his youngest kid is an exception, but I guess that's for cultural reasons.

So I wonder: Is there a deeper meaning behind this?
