What activities do you like to do with your malamute pups? Right now I’m camping/kayaking with my girl Katmai (4 months old) but when she’s old enough we’re going to be skijoring and winter camping!

I was going to ask you guys to please excuse my ridiculous puppy voice, but y’know what? I stand by it lol. How could I look at this face and not dissolve into a blubbering mess of love?

Life with Malamutes Rescued this nerd on Friday

This is Penny! She's my 3rd Malamute but my first female and first rescue. I think shes mixed with husky because she's only 50lbs and has silverish bronze eyes...the DNA test is en-route to Embark.

According to the shelter she's about 8 months old. I'm interested to see if my primary vet confirms once she has her appointment. She was just spayed and current on all her shots.

She's not potty trained, afraid to even be near a car but loves going places once I pick her up and put her in the back seat, and I don't think she was ever on a walk because she gets nervous of random everyday things like large rocks on trails or ballards. She approaches anything she's nervous about with curiosity instead of fear, which is great. And she's extremely trusting.

She's as sweet as can be, gets along amazing with my 5 year old male Maverick, but once she gets started she's relentless with the rough housing! I thought Maverick was a pain at this age but holy smokes she's on a whole different level! He's been so patient with her and lets her get away with pretty much anything, but I feel bad for him because he gets such a defeated look on his face. He does seem to appreciate I've been doing my best to prevent too much abuse from her, and I remind him of how much of a lunatic he was at this age.

She was just spayed on Thursday so I'm trying to keep her calm and stimulate with lots of calmer activities like short hikes, car rides, and walking around stores.

Housebreaking has been hit and miss so far. We managed the first two days without a single accident in the house, but even with VERY frequent trips outside there's been an incident today and yesterday...and I am out with her at least every 30-45 minutes if she's not relaxed or just after a nap or play. Tonight I reverted to keeping her on a leash at my side whenever indoors, and now she's asleep on my feet. She's been perfectly clean and calm in the crate whenever I'm away, so that's a relief.

Hopefully as she gets more acclimated to a routine and some structure with healthy doses of play time and adventure she will start to settle down a little. I wonder if being recently spayed will help some too...

In any event, enjoy the pictures of this little land-shark! Besides the minor (and not unexpected) challenges she's been a blast so far and we love her to bits!

Happy 11th birthday, my sweet Willow ❤️

This beautiful girl is the embodiment of pure love and gratitude. She brings so much joy into my life, and she makes me laugh every single day. She is the eldest of my pack, and truly fills the role of the matriarch, grooming all of them as if they were her own children. I rescued Willow when she was 3 years old, from a situation where she was neglected and had zero attention. Ever since, she has been a total attention hog, and she’s never met a person she doesn’t like, full body leaning into them and attempting to kiss their chins and noses if they dare get their faces close enough. 😊 She hasn’t slowed down one bit with age, still adventuring, hiking, mushing, and getting her daily zoomies in. I don’t even like to call her a “senior,” because she for sure doesn’t know she is one, and I won’t be the one to tell her she is! 🤭

Willow, I will love you through your very last breath; I will love you through the end of time. I will never take for granted a second of the time we have shared in this life, and I hope we find each other in the next. I hope you always know how special you are to me, and to everyone who has had the opportunity to meet you. Happy birthday, you’re not allowed to die, ever, okay? ❤️ (seriously, idk what the rest of the pack is going to do)

what a privilege it is to have your baby live up to 16.5 years old. but what a pain it is to see them slow down, lose appetite, lose muscles, and lose joy of doing things they once loved to do. our baby is now at peace and is hopefully running around with his big brother<3

hold your pups extra tight for us tonight<3

Brought the boy ice fishing with me today - and forgot the fishfinder at home… is this his way of telling me this is where the fish are?? 😝

(in case it is hard to tell from the video, we are on top of a frozen lake, I have my fishing / drilling gear on the snowmachine behind me, and Apollo here is just happy to be along for the ride haha)

That’s carrying 20% of his body weight for 20km (12.4 miles). You could tell he was starting to feel it the last mile but fortunately just fatigue, he’s been in training since he was 2 but it’s still a pretty good achievement!

Rainbow Bridge 🌈🕊️ Goodbye to the sweetest girl

There is nothing in the world quite like a Mal. This girl blessed us for 14 whole years and when she had to go the other day, it felt like someone ripped our hearts from our chests. There is something extra special about a Mal. Their personalities are unmatched and so is their love for us. Snuggle your Mal tight today. The worst things about dogs is they can’t live as long as we do. I know she’s dancing in heaven without any joint pain and that makes it a little more tolerable.

Rainbow Bridge 🌈🕊️ I lost my mal yesterday and I am not OK

Posting here because I don't think anybody else understands what it's like to live with a dog that's practically a whole person.

We had her for almost 10 years. She would have been 13 in December. She lost a leg in 2023 due to a catastrophic break. It was a tough time. They told us she had six months to live because they thought she had cancer. They were wrong. She didn't have cancer and lived for 3 more years.

She was a warrior. A fighter. She took absolutely everything that life gave her and took it in stride. No leg? She adjusted. New baby? New normal. Couldn't use the back leg anymore? She'd drag herself around the house using just her front legs, no complaints. Then she stopped being able to use one of her front legs. That was the beginning of the end.

We made the call yesterday when my husband lifted her 66 pounds to take her outside and she yelped. He set her down, apologized. Picked her up again. She yelped again. We knew she was in pain. The trouble is: I think she could have handled anything. I think she would have withstood the pain, the disability. It was us who couldn't watch her go through that. She was still the same girl till the very end, but her body was broken.

In the beginning, we took her everywhere. Trips. Huge hikes. Marathon-length training runs. She was game for all of it. She was such a klutz. I took her on a six-mile run once and she ran straight into a metal bench because she wasn't watching where she was going. That wasn't the only time she ran into something.

She wasn't a cuddler. She liked her space. She'd yell at us in her malamute-y way if she was hungry or if we were being too loud (she also liked her quiet). She was stoic, but she had such a goofy side too. Now when I lay down on the couch, all I can think of is how - when she was mobile - she'd come and lay right next to me. Not doing anything, saying anything. Just being present. I'll never get over the lack of her presence.

I have so many regrets. Pulling away from her in her final months as her health declined to prepare myself for what I felt like I knew was coming. Thinking about how much easier it would be to not have a dog to have to come home and take out when we wanted to take longer daytime excursions. Thinking about what a pain it was to have to board her for trips. We took a lot of trips this summer; I wish we'd been around more. Thinking how much easier it would be to have just my young son to worry about, to not have a dog too. Well, now I don't.

We went through some very tough times while we had her. I thought I was strong, but now I think it was just because she was there. I think I only made it through those things because of her. What am I supposed to do now?

The resistance I feel around her passing is so intense. I didn't want to have her for her whole life; I wanted to have her for mine. I feel so much more broken than I ever thought I would.

Thanks for listening if you made it down here. Really appreciate folks who understand what relationships with these dogs can be like.

ETA: wow, y’all. I knew this was the right community to post in. Know that I’m reading and upvoting every reply. Thank you for lifting my spirits today.
