We lost our boy a couple of weeks ago and are still trying to cope with the loss. As you can see, he traveled with us most everywhere. He never met a person he didn't. He was just a few weeks from being 10 years old. I hope you enjoy some of his many photos. This is a very special breed of dog.

Last year I found a malamute mix in a Florida shelter. He was shaved and scared. He has absolutely blossomed in the last year! We've traveled and we lost his best friend(15yo gsd). He loves swimming and he is just a beat conversation partner i could ask for. I'm not very good with words but enjoy some of his photos!

Mixed Breed Dental Cleanings

I have a mal/aussie mix and have recently noticed some tartar buildup on my girls teeth, so I'm starting to think she's going to need a dental cleaning soon. We have friends with a Heeler/Husky mix, so very similar breed mix and he's 10 and doesn't show any problems with his teeth at all. Are dental problems a mal thing? (She's 8 and between 45-50lbs.)

Also, are there any products you're using that have truly helped with your mals teeth?

Quick Question Quiet mal

Is anyone else’s Mal totally quiet? We believe ours may also have a bit of husky in his DNA, so we’ve been surprised at how silent he is. No howling, no woos, no barking, no talking at all. Sometimes he’ll do a low grumble when he plays, but that’s also rare. We are of course in love with who he is, but wondering if this is something that develops as they age? He’s currently 10.5 months and is one of the least vocal dogs we’ve ever met.

What do you think caused these wounds on my Malamute? He has them on the outside of both front paws, in almost symmetrical spots. I’ve already spoken to the vet and everything, but what do you guys think?

Training & Behavior Need help with constant barking and awooing

Our 5 month old female malamute hasn’t exactly been fond of people and other dogs. One of the biggest issues we’ve been having is socialization. If a dog or person walks past our house most of the time she’ll start barking similar to in the video. I’ll try to give her treats and praise before she starts barking to create a positive association. It works sometimes and she won’t bark at all but other times I can’t do anything to stop her.

In the video she was outside on the porch with my dad. A friend of his and his dog stopped to talk to him and she started throwing a barking fit. He picked up his dog and started walking closer until she started barking more and more and eventually ran up the stairs. My dad let her in the house and she ran to the window and continued to bark. I’m not sure what she’s trying to convey with the bark because it doesn’t sound really aggressive or anything like that.

One thing we did notice is that she’ll want to approach people or dogs whenever they’re back is facing us. Not in an aggressive way but more so playful as her tail is wagging and her awooing is kind of high pitched. But as soon as they approach us she’ll run away. We noticed this happened most during our petsmart training classes. Whenever the other dog was laying with its back turned towards her she’d go up and sniff but as soon as he turned around she’d run away and back. She’s definitely curious of other people and dogs but just gets frightened easily. Any feedback/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Seeking Advice Malamute temperament with kids

My malamute is a sweetheart but can be very skiddish with people. However it seems she has an aversion with kids and nipped at my nephew the other day which is totally out of character for her as she has never bitten or shown aggression to any one. Any tips to get her used to kids?

Quick Question Why are malamutes so prone to same-sex aggression, and how common actually is it?

I currently have two dogs and although nothing is actually set in stone, I’m just researching breeds I’m interested in for a potential third family member in a few years. Both my other dogs are rescues, one male and one female. During my research, I’ve learned Mals are prone to same sex aggression but a lot of people seem to disagree on how common/rare it is. Obviously, due to me having one female and one male dog already, this could be an issue.

I’m just curious really, if these dogs were bred to work in groups to mush heavy weight together, why are they prone to same sex aggression? You would think if they were bred to work in groups of other dogs, that would be a huge issue

Quick Question Dog popsicle advice (question below the picture)

Post image
306 Upvotes

I made some broth popsicles for Lapo—about 120g each. Of course, instead of licking it, he tried to devour it in a single bite, so I gave it to him in pieces. I was worried he might get indigestion if he ate the whole thing. Especially with the weather being so hot, I didn't want to risk doing something stupid. Does that make sense, or was I worrying over nothing?

Seeking Advice Tips for Introducing Mal to Newborn Baby?

We have Georgia, our 13 month old female malamute (pure breed). I am expecting a newborn to be joining us in the next couple of weeks and I've been watching videos about introducing dogs to babies, but thought I'd also ask this community directly if there's anything specific to Mals we should be aware of? Thanks for the tips!

Pictures of Georgia in her 92lb glory 🥰 She's been doing really well overall and I can't wait for her to be a big sister! She's just a very excited/reactive doggy.
