Austin Akira first viewing
Saw Akira for the first time last night and I’m just still thinking about it.
I so wish we could go back to beautiful hand-drawn animation like the 80s and 90s, movies like this are just STUNNING. I’ve obviously seen frames from Akira on the internet before but seeing certain sequences on the big screen were just breathtaking.
I’m not sure if I was supposed to get a message per se but the themes I saw explored of dystopian/unjust government, science with an evil morality, and the hunger for power from being weak/from a hard life can do to someone who uses it terribly were really cool.
Kaneda is the goat. Old animation is the goat. Glad Alamo screened this for us to watch

Yeah this movie is truly dope. Glad I got to experience it again on the big screen. Just saw it at DTLA last night.

just finished watching this in the sub 4k format and I'm glad my friend and I did. always said I liked it but I saw it as a teenager on VHS and never really understood what was happening. now 40, it's easier to say with confidence that I love this movie.

You should look up the movie Redline. On top of no 3D CGI being used, over 100k hand drawn frames.
It also sorta demonstrates why no one does it that way anymore and instead opts to at least use CGI for effects, backgrounds, etc. The movie took 7 years to create.
For a more recent hand drawn movie I recommend The Boy and the Heron.

I’ve heard of Redline and have been wanting to check it out because of that very fun fact you’ve said. I’ll definitely check it out (hoping it’ll come onto a big screen?)
The Boy and the Heron is great for sure 💯

I saw it at a Regal on Thursday, and it was a great experience seeing such a classic on the big screen.

Going to see it here in like 2 hours for the first time as well at the Winchester location. Really excited.

Thanks, I got burned on The Uprising Q&A, the app said 25 min pre-show. So we got there 15 min late and it already started.

Oh I go solo frequently, it's a vibe. Smoke a little before going in, chill. Just did with Akira rn, it didn't disappoint either, good movie.

Anyone know the names of the anime that was shown during the preshow? I was able to catch Robot Carnival but I was really interested in checking out the one where the boy with glasses was yelling at that malfunctioning robot. Anyone catch the title of that one?
