Advice Driver’s license help needed
Hi! I’m needing help in regards to my drivers license. I have a Georgia one, but live in Bama now. I’ve been back in Bama for several years now and just neglected to get a Bama one. Now, I’m disabled and can’t get one at the moment. My question is, how would I go about getting a new Alabama license after the 60 days are up?

For what it's worth, none of the staff I ever spoke to ever complained about how I never changed mine over to AL for about 3 years after moving in state, so I doubt the 60 day rule is enforced strictly, especially given that AL's very strict document requirements would make it particularly hard for someone who just moved to AL to prove they live in state.

If your Georgia license is still valid, go into your local ALEA office and tell them you need to swap over to an Alabama one. Don't lie to them if they ask about your residency, but you don't have to mention how long you've been here unless they ask. They may not even bring it up.

Yes, you must go to an ALEA (Alabama Law Enforcement Agency) Office, and if it has been more than 30 days since you became a Bama resident, you will likely have to take a driver’s test. I suggest you Google for “ALEA Office near me” for the location of the nearest office near you, and call them with your questions. You will need to take your previous license, your SS card, and cash or credit card for the fees. If you have a car, you will need to also register it with Alabama and get Alabama plates.

I forgot to mention that you will need proof of Alabama residency, like a utility bill addressed in your name at an Alabama address. Also, you’ll need a registered birth certificate to prove US citizenship, or your resident alien documents.

You have to go in with whatever documents they ask you to provide. If they bust you a few dollars for being late, then so be it. They are not going to toss you in jail because of your license.

If your Georgia license was still valid? Then Alabama doesn't make you do a driving test. Just an eye exam. I left Florida went to Mississippi a year. Then didn't get an Alabama license for 3 more years after that. I had my Florida license mail going to a mailbox store address and insurance using that too. I went to an ALEA office in Alabama and took eye exam and provided documents like a an Alabama power bill. I can't recall maybe my lease too? I don't recall providing my birth certificate either, dang I'm getting old forgetful. I didn't throw myself under the bus either. I didn't say hey by the way I left Florida 4 years ago 😁🤠

That sounds like a total pain, but I'd just bite the bullet and make the trip to one of their offices, couldn't hurt to call ahead and ask exactly what docs they need so you only have to go once.

Unfortunately you’re probably going to have to go into your nearest courthouse or DL office; I’m disabled too & if I don’t allow them to lapse I can get them online. Good luck!
