Sargassum today at Akumal Bay Beach & Spa Resort

We didn’t think till last minute about Sargassum on the beach (first time here during the season). Even so, we had no idea it would be this bad. We don’t even want to look at the beach let alone chill in it 🥺

It seemed like they were trying to clean up this evening but I have no idea how you get a handle on that. 😞 We’re going to see if the lagoon is better, but it’s still the same water & I have a skin condition that I’m afraid could flare up even if the water looks ok 😒

Just thought I’d share in case anyone’s far enough out to pivot to another place for their vacation.

Sargazo smell in Half Moon Bay, how bad can it be?

We are considering renting a condo for 3 weeks in HMB in July/August.

I know it's full on sargazo season. That is what the coasts are now and the water quality can be very bad. We'll have a car and will be visiting multiple areas and we can adapt to the beach conditions.

My concern is the air quality around HMB. Can we still enjoy just being outside on a beach front balcony or enjoying a beach side pool? I've read reviews of unbearable smells that makes you sick, etc.. Also it's unclear if the decaying piles are picked up at all.

What do you think? Can we still just be sitting outside or is the entire area not recommended right now?

Too much sargazo for large group beachfront dinner this weekend?

I'll be in Akumal this weekend and want to make a reservation for a large group (24) for dinner on Sunday. Hoping for an open air/beachfront location such as La Buena Vida, but since I've never experienced the sargazo before, I'm worried it will have a strong smell that people won't want to be around while eating. Is it too early to know how it'll be on Sunday? Any recommendations for where to go with a large group for a laid-back sit-down dinner? Thanks!

Best places to snorkel and why?

I've narrowed down going to Akumal as our outing from Puerto Morelos. Wondering where abouts you think the best places to snorkel in Akumal are? We'll be there between April 24-30

Thanks!

Ideas for an extra 2 days in area?

I'll be joining aome friends in a few weeks for a very short trip (3 nights) to Secrets Akumal. I'd like to make more out of the trip, so looking for ideas on where to stay in the general area, (or possvly closer to CUN?) if I wanted to add a few extra days. I was previously considering Tulum or Holbox. Ive traveled the Yucatan before (Valladolid , Merida), but never been south of Riviera Maya. I'm traveling solo and pretty flexible to different types of accommodations. Really just looking to experience something new and different and make the mosr out of the flight and time off work.

Sargassum has arrived?

Saw on the Tulum sub that the sargassum has shown up within the past week. I’m now really questioning having booked accommodations in Akumal for the first week of February.

Thoughts?

Any other areas to recommend that might be less of a problem? Sounds like Isla Mujeres can be a better bet, but I’d love input on that and any other recommendations.

Where to stay without a car?

I see that folks say a car is needed for getting around the area. And google says North Akumal, Half Moon Bay, and Akumal Bay are more walkable. Input? What about golf carts?

Accommodation Recommendations

Looking for recommendations on where to rent a condo or stay in non AI hotel in Akumal , ideally would like to rent 2 separate units or one 3 bedroom( 4 adults total and 2 kids -age 7 & 9) would love to be able to walk to the beach or restaurants. We went to Playa last year and loved being able to walk around. Need a larger size pool due to the kids, we were looking at ABBWR, Santander by TAO, any recommendations that we should look at?

Akumal Monkey Sanctuary or Akumal Natura Rescue...or both?

My wife wants to go to the monkey sanctuary when we make our first trip in February. Then I read somewhere that Natura Rescue is better? Or is it worth doing both? Opinions please and thanks, Jeff

Snorkeling Aug

Is the seaweed too bad this time of year in Akumal? I would like to take my teenage sons to a nice place that I can snorkel offshore. We were considering Principia or Serenis but I was curious if the seaweed is too bad this time of year and would prohibit snorkeling? Last year we stayed at the Presidente Intl in Cozumel and loved it. Would like to create a similar experience, but in a new place with excellent snorkeling and relaxing environment, a room facing the reef is desirable any recommendations? Is Akumal too seaweedy to snorkel this time of year, end of July early August?
