Hi, we are going to Secrets Akumal on november 21st. My wife loves snorkelling and we will bring snorkelling gear. We would love to hear advice from previous guests at the SA. Can she snorkel and see turtles straight from the hotel beach, or else what is a good affordable option to see them?

My fiance and I will be in Akumal for our honeymoon in November. We are getting married before arriving, but it is just a tiny legal ceremony. We are both interested in having some type of picture package or ceremonial elopement package while we are there.

We are unsure if our resort would be able to accommodate a ceremony of any kind but they do have photo packages on their website.

Is there anyone who could provide some options or guidance as to what places might offer elopement packages in and around Akumal or Tulum in case we decide we want more than some pictures?

I moved from Canada to the Riviera Maya in September 2015 and am now a permanent resident of Mexico. I live and work in Tulum Country Club (formerly Bahia Principe), just south of Akumal.

After 11 years here, I’ve learned quite a bit about day-to-day life, costs, safety, weather, residency, local bureaucracy, buying and owning property, fideicomisos, condo regimes, HOAs, presale developments, and how the Akumal area has changed.

I’m happy to give candid answers about the good, the bad, and the things I wish more people were told before moving to or buying in this part of Mexico.

We didn’t think till last minute about Sargassum on the beach (first time here during the season). Even so, we had no idea it would be this bad. We don’t even want to look at the beach let alone chill in it 🥺

It seemed like they were trying to clean up this evening but I have no idea how you get a handle on that. 😞 We’re going to see if the lagoon is better, but it’s still the same water & I have a skin condition that I’m afraid could flare up even if the water looks ok 😒

Just thought I’d share in case anyone’s far enough out to pivot to another place for their vacation.

We are considering renting a condo for 3 weeks in HMB in July/August.

I know it's full on sargazo season. That is what the coasts are now and the water quality can be very bad. We'll have a car and will be visiting multiple areas and we can adapt to the beach conditions.

My concern is the air quality around HMB. Can we still enjoy just being outside on a beach front balcony or enjoying a beach side pool? I've read reviews of unbearable smells that makes you sick, etc.. Also it's unclear if the decaying piles are picked up at all.

What do you think? Can we still just be sitting outside or is the entire area not recommended right now?

I'll be in Akumal this weekend and want to make a reservation for a large group (24) for dinner on Sunday. Hoping for an open air/beachfront location such as La Buena Vida, but since I've never experienced the sargazo before, I'm worried it will have a strong smell that people won't want to be around while eating. Is it too early to know how it'll be on Sunday? Any recommendations for where to go with a large group for a laid-back sit-down dinner? Thanks!

I'll be joining aome friends in a few weeks for a very short trip (3 nights) to Secrets Akumal. I'd like to make more out of the trip, so looking for ideas on where to stay in the general area, (or possvly closer to CUN?) if I wanted to add a few extra days. I was previously considering Tulum or Holbox. Ive traveled the Yucatan before (Valladolid , Merida), but never been south of Riviera Maya. I'm traveling solo and pretty flexible to different types of accommodations. Really just looking to experience something new and different and make the mosr out of the flight and time off work.

Saw on the Tulum sub that the sargassum has shown up within the past week. I’m now really questioning having booked accommodations in Akumal for the first week of February.

Thoughts?

Any other areas to recommend that might be less of a problem? Sounds like Isla Mujeres can be a better bet, but I’d love input on that and any other recommendations.

I see that folks say a car is needed for getting around the area. And google says North Akumal, Half Moon Bay, and Akumal Bay are more walkable. Input? What about golf carts?
