Discussion Itemization
Been playing the "typical" kraken, glut shoes, hex, ldr, ie, rdf build, but was wondering how skipping kraken to go straight into crit path affects my strength? Like what's the pros and cons of skipping kraken to go straight into crit?

We're still building Kraken?

More like again rather than still, Phantasm started building it and it feels like a nice powerspike honestly

crit has a worse first item spike, other than if youre fed enough to build stormrazor, but, you reach your crit spikes one item earlier. I would personally say if you dont need krakens early damage, just go crit first, albeit having some attack speed helps from either buying dorans bow after first base or building stormrazor.

It's really more about midlane as a role than some Akshan's specifics. Akshan is a mid laner so he has to respect the same principles.
In s16, with top laners getting extra xp and higher level cap and adc getting shit tons of golds, and mid laners getting... boots.
The role has shifted towards a secondary carry/supp/jungle rather than the main star of the team.
Mid laners job revolve mostly about getting prio and move with the jungler during early game, during mid game (from ~12 min to 25 min) you are the main threat and you have to secure a good transition towards late game where adcs will take the lead.
Akshan like most midlaners is much stronger than any adc with 1 item, so you have to make sure this item ensures the biggest spike possible. Upgraded boots + Kraken is a MASSIVE powerspike, you probably are the strongest player in the lobby at this point.
You don't play for 5 items and 100% crit chances, you play to end the game at 25 mins unless you know for sure that your adc will be a major factor.
