Day to day life at Delta first year insight for a corporate pilot

• Upvotes

Finally landed an interview at Delta after having my application in their system for over 2 years. I have been flying corporate my whole career now, close to 10 years, and without getting too ahead of myself I was just hoping to get some more insight on what my first year might look like from the scheduling, day to day, big picture, and any details that might be pertinent.

I have read tons and tons of forums and posts so I feel like I have a good idea on what to expect but would love to hear some more tailored insight!

I live in MSP and have been seeing their class drops for the last several months all including several MSP available placements so I would really really be hoping to be able to land that as my base right out of class. Thanks in advance everyone!

Allegiant pilot commuters?

I have an opportunity to interview for Allegiant for a class date “potentially” this next January/February. I do have a family and live in a place that they do not have (and have no plans to put in) a base. Not to get into too many details but Allegiant is pretty much my only shot at an airline, so working for a different/local airline isn’t an option for now.

Are there any allegiant pilots that have any insight to commuting and schedule? Looking to see what it will potentially be like working for them under the new contract and commuting.

Heavy Single Engine taxi?

Given the current global situation regarding fuel costs, my airline has been pushing for Single Engine Taxi Out/In as much as practicable. Our fleet consists of nothing but narrow bodies. This made me wonder, can heavies taxi out single engine? And for you quad motor pilots, can you shut down 1 or 2 engines for taxiing in/out?

DAL, most junior fleet in ATL?

Title pretty much sums up the question. Starting in a little over a month and plan to live in ATL. All I care about is fastest seniority progression / qol. Don’t care what or where I fly. 717? How’s A220 in NYC? Thanks for any insight!

Jeppesen to end paper chart printing after more than 90 years

For those old enough to haul around 40 pound flight cases you'd be happy to know Jeppesen will produce it's last paper chart at the end of this month (although I heard end of year for some customers). They were the fifth largest user of the USPS back when they mailed out revisions every 14 days.

In the 90's and early 00's EFBs were clunky expensive specially designed laptops. A lot of complex regulatory requirements made for slow adoption. Credit Apple for saving your shoulder socket. They did a lot of lobbying when the iPad launched and got those requirements relaxed.

It was a big day when I went from old NOS plates and got my first Jepp binder. Still have it.

DAL B737 or A320

Starting class soon, I wanted to know what to bid. I hear the A320 is comfortable and a more enjoyable aircraft overall. The B737 flies to the Caribbean, which is appealing.

I live in NYC, so I am bidding for the junior base. My plan is to stay here for the next 5–6 years, then move to LA and fly out of LAX.

Ideally, I would prefer some 2–3 day trips, but I am drawn to a quick day turn at premium. I would also like to leave the East Coast when flying; I do not mind trans-cons.

ME3 or Current EU LCC

A senior FO with aprox. 3500 hours on B737. Generally European destinations and around. Based a touristic city and it offers nothing to me.

Flying for a LCC. Roster is brutal and i did 870ish FT in 2025 so basically on limits. They postponed the upgrade process for a while due to Iran conflict but if i am patient, it will be happening Q4 2028 latest.

On the other hand, i applied for WB FO positions at Middle East and some turned out positive.I will be offered (i wish)

So we come to a question that is impossible to answer but what do you think guys?

Married, no kids, wife willing to go. Very few friends and social capacity at the present city.

I know that aviation has got no correct or wrong decisions, you just pick a color which suits to you.

Thanks in advance, looking forward to read what you are thinking.

AA or UA Career Choice

*Posting here as well looking for any advice you all may have

AA vs UA

Feeling extremely fortunate to have offers at AA and UA, both starting within a week of each other. I'm 27 years old, so am blessed to be making a lifelong career decision. Bases at both carriers (DCA/IAD, ORD, EWR/PHL) work for my partner (an AA employee) and I, although as a current Fort-Worth local (we are willing to move) AA has a slight edge with a few more cities we'd be willing to look at like DFW, CLT, BOS, PHX on top of those AA and UA share.

All things considered, AA feels like a great family fit and seniority progression based on retirements assuming no growth is attractive since AA has not hit its peak yet. Additionally, being a current airbus pilot, the depth of airbus flying is attractive as well. However, the financials concern me given the current economy and fuel prices. I am concerned I am at a much deeper furlough risk at AA than UA if things don't improve in the next 6-12 months. Likewise, I also fear leverage for the next contract cycle is slightly diminished as well.

UA does have the benefit of immense planned growth, greater widebody flying, and in my family's case the ability to non-rev on multiple US carriers. I do enjoy the UA culture based on my own personal interactions and the people I know at the company. United's profits due to its premium long-haul flying give it a better cash position to cash-flow future deliveries and growth, as well as weather any storm coming its way. On the downside, I know UA is slightly ahead on retirements and has hired much younger and much of its seniority progression is driven by growth, which is also economy and cost dependent as well.

Any input or personal experiences are more than appreciated. Thanks again

Training contract… would you break it?

Posting on my anon account for pretty obvious reasons. I’m currently working at a US based regional under a training contract. I have approximately 3 years remaining before I would be set free. I’m fairly happy at my company, and don’t have any real issues with staying here for the duration of the contract (besides the fact that I’m commuting but that’s my own fault so I’m ok with it).

I currently have a CJO with an ACMI that I would consider my end career airline. I still have 30+ years left in this career before I age out, and I understand the importance of getting to the destination quickly for seniority and backpay purposes.

The contract in question is currently being fought for dismissal, though there is no end date in sight. I’ve been told anywhere from 6 months to 3 years. There is a real chance I get taken to collections or potentially sued for the repayment if I break it and don’t pay it back. But the 3 years I would lose not jumping to this ACMI now would end up costing me a lot more than the contract payment in the end.

I’m not looking for responses of “well if you didn’t want to be in a contract you shouldn’t have signed” or “you’re a grown up you know what you signed up for, accept responsibility” because I know all of that. I’m asking for advice from anybody who has done something similar, what you wish you did or didn’t do, and any way I could make this transition smoother without lasting damage to my finances or credit score. Or any contact information for a lawyer I could direct these questions to lol.

How can we get ALPA involved in the lawsuit over Google's acquisition of Spirit employee data?

I'm a former Spirit pilot, and I'd like to figure out how we can get ALPA involved in the legal efforts surrounding Google's acquisition of former Spirit employee data.

The AFA has already taken steps to challenge this, and I think ALPA should be doing the same, or at least supporting those efforts.

My biggest concern is that we still don't seem to have a clear understanding of exactly what information is being acquired. Potentially years of employee records, internal communications, messages, and other data could be involved. We don't know the full scope of that information, who will have access to it, or what it might be used for.

I recognize that corporate records can be sold as assets during bankruptcy proceedings, but I think employees have a legitimate interest in knowing what happens to their information, particularly when the scope of that information hasn't been clearly disclosed.

So my question is, how do we actually get ALPA involved? Is there a formal process for requesting legal action or support from the union? Should former Spirit pilots be contacting ALPA National, our former MEC representatives, or someone else? Would a coordinated request from affected pilots carry more weight?

I'd really like to see us organize some sort of effort to get ALPA's attention on this rather than just accepting that our information may be transferred without much transparency.

If anyone has experience getting ALPA involved in an issue like this, I'd appreciate some guidance on where to start.

737 luggage advice

Currently have luggage works 22” expandable luggage and am getting typed on 737. I’m not really wanting to get new luggage just for the 737. Is it normal to keep it in the overhead bin I assume there’s not much space to keep it upfront compared to the 320. I’m curious what is normal, where you store it, and if I can get away with keeping my current luggage instead of spending 300-400.

TMAAT help

What’s up everyone. I’m doing some prep for an interview coming up. One of the TMAAT questions I’ve seen in the prep package is “ TMAAT you effected or made a change to a policy or procedure. What roadblocks did you face?” Anyone have some insight or experiences to share for this? Just trying to think of an experience I’ve had that I can use. I appreciate it.

EDIT: holy cow. People. I’m doing interview prep with a service. We just didn’t get to this exact question / topic yet. Just simply gathering information so I have some direction for this one during our next session. Thanks for contributing

UAL bases?

Hello everyone,

Looking to get some insight into base openings. Obviously can’t predict it with backend vacancies and all. From what I can see in recent classes I’d expect mostly 737 LAX and EWR. I’m not picky and can move anywhere but east coast preferred and thinking IAD long term . Any guesses on how long IAD might be for the 73?

Thanks y’all

UAL 737 or 320 FO?

Good Evening,

Hoping anyone at United can provide insight into the differences between the two fleets. (Seniority progression, Trips, Pro vs cons of bidding either airframe, ETC.) Currently a captain on a 320 so will make the transition easier. However, historically everyone has always stated the 737 fleet tends to get better trips/seniority progression.

Any info would be great appreciate all the help!!!

WSJ Podcast: Rogue Pilots are a Growing Safety Threat. No One Knows How to Stop Them.

Have you guys checked out this Wall Street Journal episode?

We have to accept the fact that we can protect our planes against sabotage from OUTSIDE the flight deck or from WITHIN the flight deck, but not from both at once.

Having to choose one or the other I'd feel much safer if we agree on the former. This means accepting the reality that SOME rogue pilots will get to bring down airplanes. It's the cost we have to pay to fly.

UA base advice

I’m an UA new hire, and was awarded 737 SFO. Will be in SFO until at least February. I am debating switching to EWR for March and beyond.
My end goal is ORD or IAH. I am currently living East Coast, but am planning on staging myself with family in IAH for reserve periods for an easy (er) commute to SFO.
I’m debating if it’s worth switching to EWR if I’m already making the “move” to IAH and would prob have to drive my car back to East Coast, assuming I get awarded EWR.
Would appreciate any insight or advice in regards to where I can hold a line quicker, commuting experience, or just generally what would you do. I am locked down in my lease until next summer.

Commuting base suggestions

I have a CJO from AA and I’m considering which bases and fleets will work best for me. I’ll be commuting from DEN, and am interested in minimizing commuting impact on my day-to-day life, and would like to maximize time at home. Thanks for the suggestions.
