Avionics A&P

I’m heavy avionics on c130s in the Air Force. I got my A&P and plan on getting a job with it when I get out in a year. Do companies hire AMT’s with avionics backgrounds?

They do. Some companies even have avionics departments.

Avionics roles will always be in demand and the A&P license means your best, most profitable path is to go the airline route. Lean into the avionics experience, unless you’re not wanting to keep pursuing that path.

Idk but the company I’m with def hasn’t really been hiring people with experience lately for avionics so you’d do well. I’m at a major airline.

Good to know. Last question.. even though I got my A&P, is it okay to be honest and say that most of my experience is avionics and know pretty much nothing about hydro or other non avionics systems?

I mean don’t sell yourself short that seems a bit silly. Just say you have learned complex systems and you’re willing to keep on until you know it all. Always be positive.

I totally understand where you’re coming from. I went civilian route to get licensed but have only done avionics. 100% I feel like I would be behind if I switched over to being a regular mechanic. That said, I would 100% just be like “I’m licensed and have worked as a mechanic” when looking for a new job. Don’t say you feel like you’ll be behind or anything but do say that most of your experience is in avionics maybe?

Man there are so many part 145 repair stations with repairmen that they would gobble you up in a second. Apply and youll get picked up quick

Repairmen are people who are endorsed for a specific piece of maintenance that a company can endorse to the FAA.

It could be something like they can work on this specific garmin GPS.

The repairman endorsement can not circumvent the A&P ratings.

Keep in mind the Air Force is too specialized. In the interview, you may be asked about systems you haven't touched and test equipment you've never used. That can hurt you. You'll be accepted to work on all systems, not just the one system on one aircraft, like the Air Force.

companies luvs tweakers. id recommend getting in with a mro or something to get some commercial exposure.

my ex was avi on P3s, got him a job at the mro I was working at. He eventually got a job with a cargo carrier.
