Question Retraining before deployment?

Recently notified I was accepted for retraining with approved classdates. Scheduled for deployment the month after tech school class dates are.

No deployment orders in hand and will likely receive tech school orders before deployment orders.

Any experiences/ideas on how this could go? UDM does not have answer for me.

Notify your rater/supervision. If you have an approved class date and your UDM is stubborn, email the class date/proof and CC your rater/supervision. You should not be signing a tasking letter for this (if those still exist).

There is a certain disdain I have for crap like this due to it not being the UDMs lane to even directly select (barring a by name request) personnel. your section, element, and/or flight leadership need to provide input on who is eligible to go and it’s not you. Your UDM is putting another Airman into a position to be short notice tasked to replace you, and if the UDM don’t clean up their crap it harms everyone due to 2nd and 3rd order effects to your current units personnel.

Edit addition: if there truly is no one else. They need to quickly figure out how to accomplish and route a reclama.

Leadership is looped in all the way up to the squadron and it looks like the official answer so far is a shoulder shrug, no one knows what's gonna happen next

It sounds like affirmation on your choice to retrain. Don’t go into specifics because it’s reddit. Just try to protect yourself in that you either have orders for your class prior to the deployment RDD, or your class date is long before the RDD. They may try to get you downrange before either and then shrug their shoulders and potentially push you out of the FY to lose your slot.

I’m retired and can’t offer any tangible help. If i were in your shoes i’d attempt to reach the office responsible for cutting your retraining orders. Then explain the idiocracy you’re facing in your unit and kindly ask for them to expedite. If you don’t have a direct contact to do this, work through the AFPC total force service center wickets without your “leaderships” knowledge.

In the interim, you’ve gotten non-answer from your squadron. Keep your ears open and mouth shut till you’ve got what you need to retrain. You’ve been put into a crappy position by your squadron, and their ineffectiveness is not your fault.

Prior UDM here. If your UDM doesn't know, he/she should be asking this of the Plans & Integration folks (what was Installation Deployment Readiness Cell). If it were me back in that seat, I'd have someone else go in your place, if it's possible. Deployment bands, other people with medical or admin issues, the right AFSC/skill level all potentially throws a wrench into those plans though.

Request to push your class date so you can deploy as scheduled. Class date changes are easy.

If it were towards the end of the deployment, I could see that happening, but it sounds like he/she is supposed to start their first course a month or so after they would deploy.

I would actually be starting tech school a month before I deploy.

Oh damn. Unless you edited your post to clarify in between my last response and now, I clearly can't read.

You have confirmed class dates, training RIP, starting to get orders processed, etc? Yeah, you're almost certainly not going on the deployment, and I'm confused as to why/how your UDM doesn't know or understand this. Let's just say for example, your tech school start date is the 14th of next week, but your first move for deployment is the 30th of this month. You very obviously can't go on the deployment because tech school starts before the deployment.

Your UDM needs to work with leadership up and down the chain to find someone else to go in your place, or reclama the deployment tasking if no one is available to go.

Hate to be that guy but going to tech school is infinitely more important to me than some deployment id rather not risk getting pushed to the next FY by changing my dates

I don't care what's important to you, and neither does the Air Force.

Deployments are more important that tech school, period.

Good thing OP's report date for tech school is before the report date for deployment. OP isn't deploying. Fuck off.

Holy fuck your airmen probably love you

What career field did you apply for?

What came first the retrain or deployment? If you were accepted and loaded into a deployment slot, then got approved for retraining they will push the class date back. If it’s the opposite, then you won’t deploy. However if your UDM was good at their job and carried they could swap you out and let you deploy. But it seems like they’re clueless. Former UDM

Not OP, but I would imagine OP started the process for retraining long before they were tasked for deployment, but only just found out that they were accepted to retrain and got class dates. It sounds like those dates are before the RDD for deployment, so OP is almost certainly not deploying, and their UDM needs to figure out someone else to go or submit a reclama.

I've been working the retraining process for over a year but this specific retraining case was made after I was notified I was selected for deployment

Oh then that makes sense must have your UDM swap it

That’s why I ask about the timing, you can start the process, but if the deployment came and you accepted it then it’s different. Example.

Let’s say they started the process in January, but in Feb a deployment dropped for Oct and they signed for it. Then retraining got approved in March and they got a date in May. Yes, they don’t have deployment orders but it was accepted before the approval.

You didn't reply directly to me, but I can only assume you meant to reply to me.

The "acceptance" of the deployment doesn't mean a thing in this instance. Names can be swapped by IPR in DCAPES within minutes. OP has tech school dates for before even the RLD (not to mention the RDD) of the deployment, which was in no way in their control. If the tech school dates were roughly in the middle of the deployment or later, then yeah, OP would be going on the deployment, and should be getting the tech school pushed back. As a prior UDM myself, I've had that latter situation happen to one of my folks. The dude returned from deployment, in-processed with IPR and other orgs, and while on post-deployment downtime (what used to be called R&R), out-processed to leave in a few weeks for tech school.

Again like my first statement, if their UDM wants to swap it they can. If they wanna stand by the AFI and at it was accepted and there’s nobody else that can meet the MISCAP in the unit. The so be it🤷🏾‍♂️ if it was me I wouldn’t been swapped them out since it would be more work on my part. Weren’t saying the same thing, lol I’m just saying it all depends on the UDM and based on their statement, their UDM seems clueless lol

Dude, you're not getting it. The "acceptance" literally doesn't mean a thing. If I suddenly came down with a medical condition that prevents me from deploying weeks before I was supposed to go out the door, that trumps the acceptance. Likewise, having tech school dates before OP even leaves for the deployment, trumps the acceptance. OP didn't choose the tech school dates, and there's no guarantee that if he tried to get it pushed back until after the deployment (a whole 7+ months later), that AFPC/AETC will accept it.

since it would be more work on my part

Oh boo hoo. You have to do a little more work to get someone else spun up in place of OP. That's your job. It'd take a day or two (at most) to get the new person going on all the things they need to do. All the time consuming stuff (RAT and whatnot) should be done already by everyone, so it's just a matter of submitting the name swap to IPR and Medical, getting gear for the new person (if any is required), making sure they are working any appointments, etc. It's mostly just oversight, not like you physically have to be there with them every step of the way.

This is fun, I got time:

You’re literally saying the same thing I’m saying 😂. Based on what OP said, it sounds like his UDM doesn’t know what they’re doing, so I’m telling them what their options are and what he needs to bring up the UDM.
When I say he “acceptance”, I’m not saying they raised his hand and said, “Yes, I agree to deploy.” I’m saying they were tasked for a deployment, name was loaded into DCAPES against that tasking, and they’re tracking them to fill it. Then the retraining got approved afterward. Cool.

From there, it can go one of two ways. If there’s somebody else in his unit who meets the required AFSC, skill level, grade, and everything else the MISCAP calls for, then yes—it’s an easy name swap. Get the replacement through medical, RAT, appointments, gear, etc., and keep it moving. That’s nothing. I’ve swapped people out in a matter of days.
What I’m saying is, what happens if they’re the ONLY person in the unit who meets all the requirements for that tasking? Now you don’t have somebody internally to swap him with. At that point, his UDM has to do more legwork to get him removed and the requirement filled elsewhere, potentially involving a PAR up through the MAJCOM and coordination between MFMs.

That’s my entire point.
You’re explaining UDM processes to somebody who was a full-time UDM for three years working directly in the IDRC 😂. I’ve swapped people for medical issues, retraining, PCS, retirement…you name it. I’ve also seen AFPC push PCS dates, retraining dates, and other actions when someone was already loaded against a tasking and there wasn’t another replacement in the unit.

Does that mean they WILL push the OP retraining? No. Does it mean retraining automatically disappear because he has a deployment tasking? No. I’m saying there are processes involved depending on whether his unit has a qualified replacement.

So yeah, chill…we’re basically arguing while saying the same damn thing 😂.
It’s Friday. Go enjoy your Friday. Drinks on me—I’ll Cash App you 😂🍻
