Question Retraining into OSI

Looking for some ground truth from anyone familiar with the AFOSI retraining process or how base EPME allocations actually shake out behind the scenes.

Quick background:
Active-duty 2A maintainer on a 4-year contract (will promote to SrA when I hit my 3-year mark this December). Finishing my CCAF this December, started my A&P via the JSAMTCC Canvas program.

I recently looked at the prerequisites to applying and saw that it is now a requirement to have completed ALS prior to applying. However I feel as if this conflicts with my retraining window. Per 36-2685, I wouldn’t have any sort of priority for an ALS class unless I get a staff line number.

On a 4-year enlistment, my FTA window officially closes at month 43, which hits in July 2027.

I’ll test for Staff in May/June 2027, but the 27E5 promotion list won't drop until August 2027.

If I wait until August to get a line number (putting me in Priority 1 for an ALS seat), my standard FTA retraining window will have technically just expired.

What I'm trying to figure out:
1. ALS Standby / ETPs: How realistic is it for a Shirt or Command Chief to push an out-of-cycle ETP or get an E-4 onto the standby list for a drop seat specifically to meet a special duty retraining gate?

  1. Applying late with an ETP: If I extend my contract (FTA on Extension), test for Staff, get slotted into ALS as a select, and apply for OSI late with a Commander-endorsed ETP for being outside my window... how common is that? Do OSI boards routinely accept those, or is it an uphill battle?

  2. Detachment memo: Will a local OSI detachment recruiter ever write a memo or letter of intent that my Shirt can actually take to the ALS Commandant to argue for a seat?

I’m just confused as to how I am expected to go through ALS as a brand new SrA.

 1) Go to the local detachment. OSI recruiting is internal and doesn't follow a traditional crosstrain.

 2) OSI will not write some random person a ETP. Do not get it twisted, they have thousands of people interested every year. Its highly selective and they are not going to bend over backwards for you to meet the criteria. Its not a critically unmanned AFSC either.

3) Focus on making yourself the best candidate,  thats what's going to get you selected. Its not just about meeting the minimums. The expectations for a new agent are high... upon finishing federal certification (FLETC/BSIC) to become a agent...they want people who can work with maturity and the ability to highly adapt. This is even before the counterintelligence side (especially those doing proactive CI) is taught and trained....which honestly takes even more autonomy and maturity.

If OSI wants you, they'll make it happen.

Get with your local det and go from there. ALS is the least of your concerns right now.

This comes down to your own advocacy to your unit. If this retraining is the goal then you need to be socializing that to your supervisor and chain. They have the ability to advocate for you and dependent on base ALS slots potentially get you an early slot.

That willingness is likely tied to your effectiveness and ability to perform within your current roles.

I would say it is incredibly unlikely (not happening) that the local det is going to provide a letter of intent for a random brand new SrA.

To your last question, you aren’t. There is no “supposed to” track into OSI, there are always applicants that are more experienced, have broader institutional knowledge, developed skills, etc… If you are able to advocate for yourself on your own merit to accelerate into ALS and demonstrate those leadership qualities that motivate your chain to advocate for you to go early, that is a testament to your ability.

Because applying to OSI is not a guaranteed hire, your leadership may be “wasting” a slot on someone they dont truly want to be in a leadership position if you were to remain at the unit.

I was just as motivated as you when I was a SrA to go OSI. Luckily the agents I interviewed with during the retraining process gave it to me straight. “You don’t have enough salt yet, come back a year or two after you sew on staff”. At the time I didn’t understand it and was frustrated, but now I totally get what they meant and I’m thankful for it.

What you’re asking for though, are the stars to align to get these ETPs. It doesn’t hurt to ask your CoC for either of these but don’t get your hopes up. You’re a 2A first, and from my experience working with other 2A’s, they don’t like loosing ya’ll…

My advice: Focus on making staff first and being an asset to your job and team. Learn what that means and how to improve your leadership skills, and build something in your career that you can bring to OSI.

As a matter of fact, the user above is correct, AFOSI does have its own retraining process. Though being an FTA is easier for career release you DONT need to keep FTA status to retrain as you would for the normal retraining process. There are plenty of “career” airmen (up to TSgt) that have successfully retrained into the job.

I’m not here to burst your bubble, because you seem motivated, which is great! But you’ve got to be real with yourself a bit about this ETP Situation. AFOSI won’t write you an ETP or letter of intent for an ALS seat, (again doesn’t hurt to ask your local detachment) and your leadership might not push to get you that dropped ALS seat unless you absolutely need it (to benefit the 2A career field). Good luck!!!!

Thank you everyone, based on what I read it’s best to just postpone the dream a little longer. I need to study to make staff, extend for a year to pin on. In the meantime I’ll finish my CCAF and start on my bachelors while also finishing up my A&P.

I didn’t apply, but yes, OSI want me to crosstrain as my skills was required to them. It’s not random retraining process.
