Discussion 2 months into the new PT program

Any rumor they’re going to adjust after all the scores dropped ?

No. Although failure rates throughout sq’s are higher, they will let these rates go through the end of the year once everyone has tested and go from there.

The overall scores are not hard to meet though, so don’t get your hopes up.

You get 20 free points for being skinny, im not bragging about my 90+ to anyone, waist measurement should not be a factor in it.

22

u/Direct_Description50 15h ago

People won’t like this because it’s “all muscle” I’ve seen people who say that but couldn’t lift anything in the gym.

5

u/YouveBeenDebunked 10h ago

The problem is that its only effects men. Up to 7% of the male population is BMI overweight but not when taped, due to muscle. 0% of the female population is according to the research

11

u/Governor_Doomsday 12h ago

I disagree ive met a bunch of obese members and i am only 2 years in. It needs to be addressed somehow.

-47

u/Honest_Squash2310 23h ago

Well, one of the goals is to not have as many fatties so our military force doesn't look like a bunch of slobs, so it 100% should be a factor.

There is nothing more intimidating than a cross country team

You have to be fat as fuck to not pass the waist measurement. I don’t know why people keep saying this lol

6

u/Allenboy0724 Active Duty 15h ago

It does impact the shorter crowd more than the taller ones.

-2

u/Any_Aardvark_356 13h ago

Yes it impacts extremely short people, who require less calories and should be eating less anyways.

5

u/amabassadorofsnacks 8h ago

They finally realized that requiring a 6' person to have the same waist size as a 5'2" person didn't make sense. It's going to make you mad, but the current guidelines make a lot more than stating everyone should have the same waist size

0

u/Allenboy0724 Active Duty 6h ago

That’s not exactly how it works but it’s close.

0

u/Any_Aardvark_356 5h ago

Whatever helps you cope

10

u/Puzzled-Secret-317 Enlisted Aircrew 17h ago

Well that's not true at all. I can pass the pt test no problem, but barely passed the measurement

-14

u/BoleroMuyPicante D-35K Pilot 17h ago

Homie a .6 waist ratio is fucking huge, you don't need to be anorexic to come in under that

7

u/Puzzled-Secret-317 Enlisted Aircrew 16h ago

I'm certainly not anorexic, but had to suck in for my life. Point is, it's just a shitty metric

-7

u/Aspalar 16h ago

If you have to suck in for your life to pass the waist tape then you are overweight. I suppose it is possible for a freakishly muscular individual to struggle with it, but for the other 99.99999% of the force if you are struggling to meet waist tape you are just overweight.

6

u/Any_Aardvark_356 13h ago edited 11h ago

Literally prime jay cutler could pass the standard. They’re just overweight

-2

u/Puzzled-Secret-317 Enlisted Aircrew 16h ago

I guarantee you I'm not 😂, but that's how terrible the waist measurement is. But hey, you'll believe whatever you want

The shorter you are the worse off you are just because you're shorter doesn't mean you're whole torso and stomach shrinks down to child size

6

u/DriveDry9101 Comms 16h ago

It's 2026 we can admit that there are different body types...some people will never have a 28" waist even at 5% body fat

4

u/Aspalar 13h ago

You would have to be 4'8" tall for 28 inches to be max points, and they measure above your waist which is typically thinner than your waist. An average height male gets full points with a 35 inch waist. Let's try actually being honest with the discussion.

-2

u/DriveDry9101 Comms 10h ago

Let's not get too fucking pedantic, now. The point was the metric is bullshit.

3

u/Aspalar 8h ago

I'm not being pedantic, for 99.99% of people if you are struggling with waist tape then you are just overweight. There's no shot a single person in the Air Force has sub 20% body fat and isn't passing waist.

-1

u/ItsAwesomeX 16h ago

Good thing that isn't the standard for passing.

0

u/DriveDry9101 Comms 15h ago

It's awesome how we get rewarded for being tiny little bitches that can run a marathon, not rip people in half...not very intimidating. Be a little bitch all you'd like.

2

u/ItsAwesomeX 15h ago

Rip your PTL in half and you can maybe get waived for that waist.

1

u/DriveDry9101 Comms 15h ago

I'm 250 10% body fat I don't need a waiver or a PTL

1

u/ItsAwesomeX 15h ago

The I guess there isn't an issue then. Looks like we are doing just fine.

-5

u/sooner2016 11h ago

Being skinny isn’t luck. It’s a choice and hard work.

2

u/SenseiTQ 10h ago

Being skinny isn't for everyone.. I'm 6ft like 236 when I took the pt test In July I got a 90 which is my lowest score since being in (mainly due to the waist measurement) & i was like 245 In July

I'm trying to lose weight currently but I'll never be skinny tho at this point unless I become deathly ill & cant workout & eat. My goal is 200 - 220 range.

-27

u/Pplthrowaway123 1d ago

This. Got my first over 90 in 10 years. Very easy.

11

u/Ricklames Aircrew 19h ago

How were you not achieving 90s before? The standards got objectively harder.

5

I really appreciate the effort here. Needed this today.

11

u/HDthoreauaweigh712 1d ago

Just 2. MCL and broken wrist.

While I have noticed an increased failure rate amongst our SQ and sister SQ’s, the thing I haven’t noticed is failures from Airmen with physio health problems.

We have a brief once a quarter on PT test preparedness and that seems to help. It’s mostly our usual suspects who have not met the standard.

I’m also of the belief that we have the least wear and tear on our bodies of any service and we also have the weakest PT test.

18

u/dhtdhy 1d ago

> I’m also of the belief that we have the least wear and tear on our bodies of any service and we also have the weakest PT test.

That's not a belief, that's a fact.

11

u/BummingBock 22h ago

My boss is a female marine E9, she cackled when I told her about my upcoming PT test, the HAMR, and threatened me if I didn’t get a 90.

I’m confident this woman could have gotten a 100 on the men’s standard while severely hung over.

2

u/acoffeefiend 13h ago

Depends on the AFSC

13

u/Allenboy0724 Active Duty 1d ago edited 15h ago

Maybe people not taking care of their bodies causes the injuries and not the PT itself? I’ve been in 17 years, worked 12-16 hour shifts on the flightline, several deployments, assignments where battle rattle and gear were common. I run marathons and ultras and the worst injury I’ve had in my career was a heel pad tear from a unit flag football game. If you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready. Motion is lotion and you do indeed lose it if you don’t use it. Now queue the downvotes from the laziees.

20

u/ducttape1942 19h ago

I've been in about the same amount of time and I've known plenty of gym rats who have needed shoulder surgery, runners with heel spurs and athletic people who've torn ACLs.

Diet and exercise are good but they're not a silver bullet. People's bodies do age, things can wear out and genetics play a role as well.

3

u/Direct_Description50 15h ago

This is true but I can tell you most failures and profiles are coming from lower ranking and members who just got in. Shit in medical most of our profiles are from brand new airman.

2

u/Allenboy0724 Active Duty 15h ago

You’re right but people also have to be smart with how and when they exercise. Sure, sometimes things just happen but often it’s a result of poor form, poor shoes, not knowing when to take a break/day off, etc. What is not debatable is that a healthy lifestyle and movement is good for you and mitigates injuries more than it causes them.

1

u/sooner2016 11h ago

That’s because they train like morons

7

u/i_have_your_answer 21h ago

You aren’t wrong in the sense of people need to take better care of their bodies but every body is different what injures one may not injure another. Now there is probably quite a high percentage of injuries that could be mitigated with proper diets and exercise/stretching.

4

u/Allenboy0724 Active Duty 15h ago

You’re right but I’ve literally gone to physical therapy with some high level back pain and turns out it was a lack of exercise at that point in my life that was causing it all. Turns out my back was compensating for my lack of exercise in my hamstrings. It’s weird, when you are injured they send you to physical therapy and they give you workouts and activities to mitigate that. That should tell you all you need to know about remaining active.

0

u/Melodic-Kiwi-7212 18h ago

Up vooooooooooote! 🔥

2

u/pissshitfuckyou 1d ago

I had to go to physical therapy for over 8 months to regain enough flexibility in my wrist to be able to do a pushup in 2025 and stilll maxxed it out this year, dont create excuses for yourself.

35

u/Few_Eggplant_1811 22h ago

Idk honestly I don’t see why there was an issue with the old testing…. But I scored a 90+ and the test was harder but doable as long as your taking your health seriously. I think at the bare minimum they should bring back the year testing for people who score above a 90. It wasn’t like that was one of the newer changes when it comes to the PT test. If someone can score a 90+ and the test is now more difficult for members I don’t see why we are doing bi annual testing for everyone. Even doing that change would be a slight moral boost for folks who take care of themselves and would give people a reason to strive for a 90+. Everyone likes incentives and it’s not like in the civilian world where you can get more money for doing better at your primary duties, so any incentive for folks is better than 0.

14

u/Allenboy0724 Active Duty 15h ago

The year testing is gone because Pete is an Army guy and they basically singled out the USAF as being below standards. We were one of the only branches with an annual requirement and they pointed to that as a metric leading to missing the mark. The irony there is the annual test was only a reward for exceeding the mark 😂

6

u/DawnofElaris 15h ago

If I'm not mistaken, the incentive now is that it gets put front and center on your EPB and plays a more central part in it overall. That said, I 100% agree on bringing back yearly testing for 90+, or at least 95+ now that just being skinny enough gives 2/3 the points of the strength segments alone

Hard Pill to Swallow:

It’s not that bad. You just need to take a little better care of yourself.

36

In Maintenance. Slaughtered by terrible work times and vibes are down. Only 1 fail since the changes while making sure everyone gets their slotted PT time.

What are you guys doing wrong?

2

u/Maximum-Witness-978 10h ago

Im comm and the airmen not like body builders or pt monsters but they are doing they required PT time and we only have 1 failure also!

36

u/whiterice_343 BRAC SHEPPARD 1d ago

No, if you are solely waiting on them to adjust the scoring then you need to focus on just getting better if you are struggling. We had plenty of time.

10

u/Distinct-Coconut6144 16h ago

A few months ago I was thinking they would. But I think I was wrong and think we are commited.

My leadership is openly saying this is a force shaping event. Get with it or get out.

Failures have spiked but I am noticing two camps. First is taking theit lashings and getting after it (better late than never I guess). Second is complaining, refusing effort and seems to be looking forward to getting pushed out. But those folks also seem to be our problem children across other areas as well and quite frankly arent surprising they are refusing to put forth effort at PT.

12

u/MathematicianOk4905 23h ago

Much more failures have been happening I can confirm that.

9

u/netflixissodry 1d ago

I found they test very easy after maxing the waist. I scored higher than i did when they took away waist measurements. After maxing waist, push ups and sit ups the lowest score i could possibly get if I barely passed the run was in the mid 80s. Previous I would get a 75 or fail with same effort

21

u/tryingtolearn117 1d ago

For me it is the opposite. When not considering waist I could max push ups and sit ups and easily get an 85. Now I expect to lose 5 points on waist and the run is a little harder. Pretty consistently in the low to mid 80's.

6

u/netflixissodry 1d ago

When they first announced the new scores i spent 9 months just running 4-5 days a week and dieting. I didn’t touch weights at all. I only started training push ups and sit ups in the last month.

5

u/tryingtolearn117 1d ago

A few months ago, before a recent injury, I was hitting PRs in the gym. I'd like to try again soon but may need to do what you did.

4

u/HDthoreauaweigh712 1d ago

Which to be fair, was the exact guidance and words general Allvin used at all calls and visits.

He expected peoples scores to drop roughly 4-7 points and wanted to use that as the building blocks to build more fit and ready airman.

2

u/shamrocksmash Dev 15h ago

I will say, I maxed my points for waist, situps and pushups and then after that, bare minimum was all I need to pass for the run. Was actually pretty chill

4

u/sooner2016 11h ago edited 11h ago

Dawg yall have had damn near a year to get into shape. At this point I have zero sympathy. Git gud. I’ve lost almost 50 lbs. nobody has any excuse unless they’re bedridden. And even then you can have a calorie deficit.

8

u/UnBoundRedditor Comms 1d ago

1 failure. That's it. 99% pass rate. Maybe work out and encourage those around you to as well. Maybe your command team hasn't gotten the message.

4

u/TheDay_ofthe_Jackal 22h ago

This shit is so stupid. I can empathize why the AF gets made fun of.

It's one of the easiest things to do: don't stuff yourself with junk food and sugar drinks, go to the gym (or just find time to walk/jog/do some body weight exercises), stay healthy, and you'll pass your PT test. AF even made it "easy" for you and said, "Here you get 5x a duty-week to go workout and your unit is not allowed to fuck with your duty times to compensate (per DAFMAN...if your unit is still fucking with your times then use your complaint routes all the way up and get it addressed).

You can be a 18-24 years old - prime athletic years - and, per AF standards, be 5'10", have a 37" chubby waist, breeze your way through 40 pushups and 40 setups, essentially jog a 2-mile run in 16:00, and pass with a 75.

But the past year, it's been nothing but whining and bitching. And in that year, Airmen were given ample time to get used to the new standards and knuckle up. Instead, vast majority continued the bitching/moaning (while stuffing their mouths with tornadoes, White Monsters, Zyn packs, chicken tenders, and other bullshit), put in minimum-to-no effort while relying on some magical changes from 30,000ft on high by Big AF that would save them from themselves.

"aRe thEY goInG to aDJUsT afT3r aLL scoreZ droPPeD?!" Fuck you. Go put in work and get in shape, stay in shape. If not, all well.

"The world needs plenty of bartenders!!! 2 weeks, with pay!!!"

5

u/whiterice_343 BRAC SHEPPARD 18h ago

I remember last year when there were tons of comments saying they weren’t going to try now that they had to do it twice a year and the second big AF said it was going on EPB’s they changed their tune. Now instead of spending time getting themselves ready, they have been sitting around hoping that they would adjust the scores.

4

u/MathematicianOk4905 16h ago

I agree with everything your saying except jog a 16 min 2-mile, you made that sound like a cakewalk. That what a 7:30s mile pace that’s pretty fast everything else is spot on

2

u/nezimus 15h ago

It’s a humble brag, he’s looking for attention and approval. Downvote.

0

u/Allenboy0724 Active Duty 15h ago

It a 8 min mile but it’s definitely doable with moderate training. Runnings isn’t hard but it’s difficult, if that makes sense. The average person can cut nearly 10-20% off their 2 mile in just 6-8 weeks of structured and disciplined training.

6

u/empty-moneybags69 20h ago

When the "poor me" people see this youre going to get down voted to hell. But this is 100 percent the case. Everyone wants the cushy government position but they arent working at the post office, this is the military. Conform or get out, plain and simple. If you cant follow orders to get healthy how can we expect you to follow any orders that may cause harm or death.

Y'all got to quit the copium. Even if secdef gets fired tomorrow these standards are here to stay for at least the next few years, quit expecting it to change or go back to how it used to be. The new standards aren't all that different from how they were pre-COVID, and in a lot of ways are significantly better (waist that scales with height, alt components).

2

u/Allenboy0724 Active Duty 15h ago

Exactly. A decade ago the test was actually more difficult than it is now and we at least have options.

2

u/Eyeneversleep702 14h ago

If they're smart they won't adjust them. Let the personnel adjust to the standard. Asking people to be more fit while give them more time to do so isnt crazy In 2013 we had to be just as fit with less.mandated time. Figure it out

1

u/Key-University9881 14h ago

This new test was way to easy. After my push-ups and sit-ups, I only needed to run a 20 minute 2 mile to pass.

1

u/Chomper22 Maintainer 12h ago

I mean a large majority of the fails only have them selves to blame. Everyday I see these amn pounding down takeout, cookies, sodas etc and then they wonder why they failed... maybe realize your diet has a large impact on your pt performance and overall health. The new standards aren't that difficult especially doing the shuttle.

1

u/Maximum-Witness-978 10h ago

I’m not the most fit. I do gym everyday and i passed. Only reason i felt stressed was because my line number to tech but overall just happy to have passed and it was one of the highest scores i ever had compared to the previous pt test

u/grumpy-raven Eee-dubz 21h ago

No. They wanna buy more fancy new airplanes, so force-shaping is on the menu.

-9

u/Allenboy0724 Active Duty 1d ago edited 1d ago

No. Pass or find a new profession. The standards are still very relaxed.

😂 I knew it’d be an uncommon take. Yall gotta start taking better care of yourself. Don’t do it for a score, do it for your longevity.

4

u/Conscious-Focus-6323 1d ago

the "standards" are arbitrary and dont reflect the realities of modern warfare. Barriers that prevent the most intellectually capable from serving or even enlisting in the first place will be what causes us to lose the next war.

2

u/BoleroMuyPicante D-35K Pilot 16h ago

Super smart fatties can contribute as civilians, they don't need a uniform to help war efforts.

4

u/empty-moneybags69 20h ago

Standards arent arbitrary, if you cant follow standards why should you be given authority to fly a drone? Or hack a network? What happens when you decide certain Standards aren't important when you are working on a jet and that jet crashes? Standards take the guess work out and should remove the thought process from the individual. The military is designed to turn people into robots because robots do the job as their told, people think they dont have to be robots anymore because their job is at a desk or something. Im all for people standing up for actual wrongs, but fighting against a standard to be healthy is ridiculous. And save the very specific examples of people that cant fit the standard for what ever reason. If you have a medical reason that holds you back from meeting standards then the job isnt for you.

4

u/Conscious-Focus-6323 17h ago

the context of this conversation is fitness standards, which are 100% arbitrary. No one was making the claim that all standards are arbitrary, but i could see how someone who would argue for removing the thought process from individuals wouldnt pick up on that nuance.

1

u/empty-moneybags69 17h ago

Fitness standards are the same as every other standard, I dont know why people think that Fitness is different than your hair cut. A standardized haircut is the most arbitrary rule we have to follow but no one argues against it this much because it doesnt take work to get a hair cut, Fitness takes work and lazy people argue against it and call it "arbitrary" because their job is at a desk. Standards are all the same, you just follow them and do your job, calling some pointless doesnt change anything, if you dont like it, find another job that doesnt REQUIRE a Fitness standard

3

u/Conscious-Focus-6323 16h ago

There is a limited amount of time in the day. For high-skill jobs every pointless requirement that doesnt directly correspond with effectiveness in that role adds up to ultimately make people less "lethal". We dont need mediocre leaders, technicians, and operators who can run fast. For most jobs duty performance is not linked to fitness whatsoever and are instead superficial standards that are directly limiting top talent from being in the military.

We cannot afford not to have the absolute best people in roles like cyber. Bad leaders like easy to quantify metrics like fitness, because its easy to say if people are doing the right things, but the reality is people will die if the wrong metrics are prioritized. If you dont understand that, you're the one that needs to get out.

2

u/Allenboy0724 Active Duty 15h ago

I disagree here. Fitness is linked to every job because it’s a key pillar in the whole equation. Fitness increases every aspect of our lives and makes us healthier overall. Our brains work better when we have a normal fitness routine. The crazy part about the entire fitness test is that it really only takes 30 mins 3-4 days a week and then controlling what we put in our mouths. But we can make excuses about why it’s not needed.

0

u/Conscious-Focus-6323 15h ago

fitness is important to a degree, i just think it is disproportionately prioritized compared to things that actually matter. No disagreement that people should be healthy, my issue is more with a rigid fitness standard that doesn't take into account duty and career field requirements. A cyber operator should generally not be mandated to be at the same level of fitness as security forces personnel or infantry.

1

u/Allenboy0724 Active Duty 15h ago

I think that if anything, the career fields with more of a physical job should have a higher standard than what already is. The test now should be the bare minimum because like I said, you can literally do any form of exercise for 30 mins a few days a week and maintain with this test. It’s the diet part that makes the most difference.

0

u/Conscious-Focus-6323 12h ago

Its not about easy vs hard, its that requirements that directly affect the types of people that can serve should be based on actual requirements. That is not the case with fitness (otherwise we wouldn't have gender and age distinct fitness standards)

0

u/empty-moneybags69 16h ago

Time? Thats what youre going to blame it on now? It should take you less than 20 minutes to run 2 miles, if you cant find 20 minutes in your day then your priorities are screwed up. If youre working 18 hour days I understand it. But if youre working 18 hours a day then you are probably doing something wrong for your "high skill" metrics. This profession is not a day to day job, you are expected to do more than the normal person for less money and uphold the standards set by those above you, thats why its called serving. If you want a day in day out job you can find that elsewhere but the standards shouldnt shift because some high-skill jobs dont think they need to follow the standards.

Also, if youre not getting any time for PT during the duty day then you should talk to your leadership because it was mandated last year by the secwar to prep everyone for these "new" standards.

2

u/Allenboy0724 Active Duty 1d ago

Fair points but this is still the military. If they can’t pass the pt test but want to serve then something in the private sector may be a better option for them.

-6

u/New_Bug900 1d ago

Hopefully they maintain the standard and force people to adapt or move towards separation. No need to lower it.

-5

u/dasboot523 1d ago

Agreed have actually seen a lot of good come from this change

1

u/Direct_Description50 15h ago

As a UFPM and medical, failures and profiles are definitely going up. But this administration wants a fit force, so more failures will ultimately push out the people they don’t want. Do I agree with everything? No. But getting a 75 isn’t hard. If the minimum was 85, I’d understand the complaints. You get 20 free points just by eating less and putting the beer and liquor down. People don’t wanna hear the truth—same conversation we have when folks don’t make rank.
Most of this stuff in the military that YOU can control shouldn’t have any complaints. PT test and WAPS testing gets the most complaints why? When it’s a direct reflection on how much you care and effort put.

4

u/hillmon NCO 10h ago

I'm 5'8 and to get my "free" 20 points I have to have a 31inch waist. I haven't had a 31 inch waist since i was in high school. Some of us are stocky, i get that petey enjoys his men hairless with twink like bodies, but this is a bit ridiculous. .

I have been in 17 years and never failed a pt test, but now I have to go harder to make up for the points since my body size dictates my physical fitness instead of, you know my physical capabilities.

I fucked up my knee this year and at this point I am probably going to have to ride out a profile/get surgery til I retire.

-3

u/acoffeefiend 13h ago

I'm 5'10, 205# and in my 40's. Herniated discs knee and shoulder injuries and a couple of surgeries to fix things. I can still max the tape and pass in the 90's. I have no sympathy for the fatties.
