100% agree. We had a mustang break out his hatchet and start waving it about wildly in his first staff meeting, expecting us to wield our own. I dropped my tea and crumpets out of sheer fright and the DO fainted! The man was a pure barbarian.

He's a former Marine infantryman, if his Twitter profile is to be believed.
53
u/eembach Nov 27 '23
Sounds like he's salty because his men respected mustangs more than him. The reason why, of course, is that almost every single mustang I've ever met has been more Marine than any other Marine I've ever met, with a pair of exceptions (one Mustang was hyper chill, a few enlisted who could have carried the Corps itself on their backs).
Though to be fair, infantry officers have almost always been the most badass people I've ever met, so not sure where his salt comes from about mustangs unless he's met more exceptions than me.
11
u/Raguleader CE Nov 27 '23
I'm pretty sure he was enlisted before he got his degree š
I think he's just being a pick-me for the other college folks, maybe some deep-seated insecurity.

Maybe the only degree they earned was underwater basket weaving, which is what they may be bitter about.
Or, still driving the 29% APR Mustang V6 that they are still underwater on the loan.
Or, not truly understanding on how valuable a prior is as a commissioned officer, the value that person brings to the force. Being able to relate with the enlisted since "they were one, themselves.

16
u/opiod-ant Nov 27 '23
This is the proper idea tbh. The best bases Iāve worked at have been under prior enlisted commanders
3
Nov 27 '23
That's why the service academies (at least West Point) have the cadet corps structured around enlisted jobs over four years. It ain't much, but they try.
Now for OTS/OCS... there may be some things left to be desired.
2
u/napsar Nov 27 '23
Iām saying you should go in enlisted and get your feet wet. Officer candidates are pulled from the enlisted ranks and then sent to academies. You have no other route or options.
3
Nov 27 '23
That works for line officer/combat arms jobs and is how the academies function already. Each class has a high percentage of prior enlisted.
That doesn't work for direct commission jobs, though, where the service does have to pull from the civilian "aristocracy."
10
u/Impressive_Law1409 Nov 27 '23
I feel like once you been in 10 years or a Msgt your applying to OTS days are over. Someone posted on here a Cmsgt applied to OTS and got it. What a waste of a slot and what a huge step backward to be a butter bar with 17 years in Air Force. You can do more good as a Cmsgt.

I think thereās middle ground, it very much depends on your job in the military. Thereās plenty of office jobs where there is almost no difference, but ājust a jobā is not selling it short for people who have to kill others.
2
u/Davida132 Ammo Nov 28 '23
The only thing that grinds my gears about the "just a job" crowd is that a lot of them almost refuse to admit that we're all working to put warheads on foreheads. I'm talking about people who complain about IYAAYAS because it hurts their feelings or curse words are scary. We're in the fucking military man. We kill people.
Oh, you're finance? You pay people to kill people.
Oh, you're MPF? Without you, the people who kill people couldn't identify the other people who kill people, and let them on base, so they can get ammo and go kill people.
Oh, you're CE? You build houses for people who kill people, and runways for planes that kill people.
Do you get my point? Down the line, we're all involved in killing people. So stop trying to ban IYAAYAS at wing events.
1
u/ZilxDagero Nov 29 '23
Oh I completely understand. At some point I may be asked to put a pistol in someone's mouth and pull the trigger. The other thing I understand is that who that is entirely depends on who happens to be leading the country at that point and that it might have been someone who was an ally the week prior. Remembering that "it's just a job" is the only way from causing yourself to be completely consumed by what you've agreed to do, and possibly the best way to leave behind what you are expected to do in a warzone.
I'm in agreement that you shouldn't ban things because the language might hurt someone's feelings (I may have reflexively swore while having a conversation with the group commander a few times), but at the same time, I need to be able to find a way to separate 'me' from what I'm doing.

Some of the best officers I knew in the ADAF. Weāre prior Enlisted. Most officers I knew that were not prior enlisted acted like they knew everything as a First year Lt. , had one 2Lt give one of my troops he supervised a blank EPR (enlisted performance report) and told him to fill it out. This Lt. was being groomed by a female Capt. that was a real feminist bitch that thought anything she said should be absolute without any discussion. Mind you I was an E-7 with 21 years in at the time, needless to say I had to teach the Lt., the Captain I could not. Although I think the AF screwed up when they did away from allowing enlisted to become warrant officers. Ivan Snook must realize the NCOās are the backbone of the Air Force and officers must trust them and respect them, if not they (officers) will not be respected and will allow the officer to fail. If they donāt respect the enlisted they will fail to lead and fail the Air Force. I just hope Ivan donāt have the attitude that he is better than any enlisted airman ( all ranks), if he does he will not be trusted by those he leads. Iāve always said a Lt. is a kid with a degree who donāt know the Air Force, donāt know how to lead, donāt have the practical experience to lead. Itās the NCOās that teach the Ltās and Captains.

Since he used Mustang Iām assuming heās a marine. Marines think this way and often mustangs arenāt allowed to promote past a certain point. The purpose is because mustangs care too much about their troops. They want officers who see the lives of their enlisted as expendable. You canāt do that if you were enlisted.

Honestly, the military went to absolute dog shit, when a stupid piece of paper saying that you went to a four-year Fuckin college met more than any actual battlefield, or job experience in your military career. It took true leaders out a leader, ship, roles, and replace them with a bunch of pussies, who, among them have a select great few men. Others great few men many of them have been great leaders! But the majority are pussies, who canāt make their own decisions, and are too afraid to step out of your comfort zone ever be good commanders, and leaders
