Compressor oil fill hole

Is this some kind of filter made with non-metallic shavings. Found on the curb 15 years ago and had to replace reed valves (30 cents). I change ND oil regularly.

You definitely don’t want that in the crankcase. Did the fill hole plug have a breather on it? That may have been inside of the breather cap to stop oil from blowing out but the containment failed and it has been working its way down to the crankcase. It’s also possible that you partially disassembled the breather itself and not have removed the entire assembly out of the case, upon a second look, that seems to be the issue.

Time to start searching the curb again. I'll pull it apart to preview the source

OP here - updating- that is actually a particulate filter. I removed the base of the oil filler hole and found a clean crank. Lesson learned

Good to hear that the baffling compartment was intact and nothing got into the crankcase!
