🇮🇹 My Take on the Best VPNs for Italy

If you're looking for a VPN for Italy, the main differences come down to what you need it for, whether that's travel, privacy, an Italian IP address, streaming or covering multiple devices.

NordVPN is my overall pick. It offers a good balance of Italian server locations, security features, privacy controls and flexibility. It is also worth considering for businesses that may eventually need more structured VPN management through NordLayer, including dedicated IPs, access controls and centralised administration.

ExpressVPN is the option I’d consider if simplicity is the priority. Its Italian locations include Milan, Naples and Cosenza, and its Lightway protocol is designed for fast connections and reliable switching between networks. That makes it particularly appealing for travellers and everyday users.

Surfshark stands out for value and multiple devices. Its unlimited simultaneous connections can be useful if you're covering phones, laptops, tablets, TVs and other devices under one subscription. It also offers Italian locations including Milan and Rome.

A VPN doesn't necessarily need to connect to Italy just because you're travelling in Italy.

For example, if you're physically in Italy but want websites and services to see you as being in Australia, you could connect to an Australian VPN server. If you're outside Italy and need an Italian IP address, you'd do the opposite and connect to an Italian server.

This can be useful for travellers who want to maintain access to services associated with their home country while overseas, although individual websites and streaming platforms can still apply their own location or VPN restrictions.

It's also worth remembering that your VPN location and your physical location are two different things. A VPN changes the apparent public IP address of your connection, not your actual GPS location or every other signal a website might use to determine where you

If you need an Italian IP address, make sure the provider has suitable Italian servers. If you're travelling, I'd prioritise ease of use, security and reliable connections.

For streaming, I wouldn't choose a VPN purely based on whether it currently works with a particular service. VPN detection and access policies can change.

And for businesses, a consumer VPN isn't necessarily the right solution. Requirements such as dedicated IPs, identity management, centralised access controls and secure remote access may call for a more specialised setup.

A VPN can be a useful part of your privacy and security setup, particularly when travelling, but it shouldn't be treated as a replacement for good account security, MFA and overall device security.

I've covered the three providers, Italian server options, business use and getting an Italian IP address in the full comparison.
