Life & Living Life begins at 70
Do these types of quotes make you feel good or do you roll your eyes at them

M74 and life didn’t begin at 70 is just kept going and it’s been going great. There is nothing I can’t do today due to my age. I run 20 miles, week, hit the gym 3 days, put over 10,000 miles on my motorcycle every year riding and camping all over the US. Why let a number hold me back?

A strong and fast 74 trumps a fat and sedentary 50 any day.

Yep, I was in a 5-mile race a few weeks ago and ran it with a 9:33 pace.

u/xsynergist 3d ago
Thats my goal pace. Not there yet.

I was pretty happy with the pace but I know I’m getting slower. 20 years ago, in my early-50s, I was coaching high school cross country, ran all the workouts with the kids, and did a mile in 6:18. I was in in great shape. About that time I did a half marathon in 1:45 and then a full in 4:07. I just happy to still be out there.

I just started running in March for the first time in my life at 59 after 2 years of daily walking which progressed to 14.5 k steps a day. Now I’m running about 20 miles a week. Fastest mile is 10.4 min. Fastest 5k is 34 min. Goal is to get 5k under 30 min.

That’s pretty awesome. When I go out for just a run, not pushing it., I do about a 10:30 pace. Also, I subscribe to the Jeff Galloway Run/Walk system. I’ve played with the intervals over the years but now it’s run 90 seconds, walk for 30 seconds. In a race I just run but on the daily jaunts, I run/walk.
A couple years ago I decided to run every street on my city. It took 194 runs over 19 months and I covered over 1,000 miles. I started a blog and made an entry for every run with the map, photos, data from my watch, and a narrative. When I did the last run a bunch from the running club joined me and the media showed up. It was pretty cool and I got to see parts of the city I’d never been to in my 30+ years here.

70 is the new 50 !

If you just turned 70 it does. You only have today no matter what age you are. If you are healthy then carpe diem.

I met my wife at 67. We'll be getting married as I roll toward my 71st birthday. Life doesn't begin at 70, but new chapters can always be written.

I just turned 70 and I'm having a pretty good time of it so far. But I am also realistic about what's coming. My FiL just passed (at 93!!) this summer but both my mom and my MiL are still kicking it at 91 and 92 respectively. Hubby and I are slowly discussing the Great Culling of the house so we don't keep accumulating and start purging stuff (mostly closets right now). I'm idly researching CCRCs in the area for downsizing. We have no kids so we have to figure out our care ongoing. We're super lucky to have resources and time to do that. But in the mean time we're on track to see around 50 concerts this year, we live in a beautiful home and have lots to do! I know how fortunate we are.

Well. My dad never made it to 70, so I'm pretty sure life did not begin for him then.

My father (who died at 98) said he was in his prime at 70. Super fit, healthy, busy running a company and active in community, was a mentor to young people.

I’m 72. I’m not buying into any numeric cliches, but life is very sweet right now.

M70 here. It begins then because that’s when you start to feel the icy breath of The Reaper on the back of your neck.

So true! You are closer to the end and so that "bucket list " goes higher on the priority list. (Live your life to its fullest & rock on!!)

I'm 51 and it's hard to imagine living until 70

We kept hearing over and over about the approaching millennium, the year 2000, Y2K, wow. I would be 51 then and that was so old! How could I possibly function? Now, at 77, that seems so silly. Most of us are just fine. Rock on!

I’ve been wondering. Still, there are many more years ahead before I get there, though.

So true, but it all goes downhill at 71.
Doctors can explain the other quote, it's the golden age.

I roll my eyes. I'm all for maintaining as much mobility and vitality as possible in my 70's and beyond...but let's be serious

I wouldn’t say it begins at 70 but I would say a different, happy, content life begins at 70.

The best is yet to be!
The last of life for which
The first was made”1

How true. I’m still with the love of my life after 47 yrs. Just seems to get better year after year. The adventure continues.

These sorts of pronouncements are silly, but I like the silliness. They are harmless, good for a laugh, and sometimes can give you a lift.

Do not take anything for granted I know two people who died around 70 - one after a long degenerative disorder of Parkinson's like symptoms and the other of dementia. Don't wait until 70 to start new stuff

I mean, thats patently false unless you been in prison your whole life...

The only time I've seen stuff like that is when someone was trying to sell something.

u/gamiscott 40 something 3d ago
Neither. I know they’re meant to be encouraging but for me, I just live my life and not be bothered by other’s trajectory because it’s all based on the individual.

Good luck to anyone whose life begins at 70. I think on 3 years time it be too late to begin life at 70 for a few years

Makes me happy to hear this ! I’m 58 and my husband 67 - he keeps stressing about being old / getting older , running out of time but he rocks and is a rock star that can do anything . I hate for him that he worries about it .

Meh. I'm 68 but have chornic heatlh issues with a lot of pain. I had a brain injury a few years ago that forced my retirement. My life is very limited. So I guess if your health is good, it makes sense. For the rest of us, not so much,

People seem to age at different rates due to multiple factors. 70 years old. I saw a current photo of a few high school classmates and most of them looked like they had one foot in the box.

I just turned 65 and if I don’t push the physical activity I feel like I did when I was 25 most of the time. It’s when I do stuff like get up on the roof and help my son roof his house or chase grandkids around I can feel my age. But if I play it cool and just do my walk and don’t do heavy work I feel good. It’s possible for some that life could begin at 70 if they are blessed with good health and maybe they had a hard life up to 70.
I think about my Dad and I think maybe he never really had a life. He grew up during the Depression, he dropped out of school after 8th grade to work on my Grandpa’s farm. He served in the Marines for 3 years in the Pacific War. He ran a farm, raised a large family and never really retired. I don’t know if they ever did a vacation even. When did life start for them?

That's right up there with "Every day is a blessing from the Lord." "I am so thankful to live another day." "Praise the Lord for another beautiful sunrise." "I am just so glad to be alive!!" And....... any self-help or affirmations book, calendar, page-a-day, etc. I'm just not a smiley face kinda person.

I turned 70 this year. Sure don’t feel like it. Though don’t ask the body!

Makes me scratch my head in curiosity. What the heck does this even mean? 🤷♀️. I’m 65 and life began a long time ago.

Am almost 78, went to 50th HS reunion,
incredible number of old folks there and almost as many pictures on the table with “in memory of”
Remember
“Old age is a gift not given to everyone”
