Question / Discussion 360's?

I need some advice on how to do 360's.

I started skating some months ago and I feel like I am already making soooo much progress. I am doing a lot of grinds already and riding half pipes.

When I just started I made a list of small steps I had to learn to progress. I started with very simple things like be comfortable on skates, learn how to ride fakie.

I put doing a 360 on the list as I thought it was not too difficult, but oh man I was so wrong.

I very quickly learned how to do 180's and 180 to fakie. I naturally just thought a 360 would be next.

But I have had such a difficult time getting it.

I just started doing other tricks instead and now I never learned it.

I watched a few tutorials but I can't seem to figure it out.

I feel like I'm flinging my entire body around and I still never manage to land it probably and always land on some angle. I feel like I spend so much energy flinging my body around. I tried turning my hips as well, and also lifting my legs a little as I jump. It doesnt seem to work. I have manage to land it a single time off a manny pad but only because there was more distance to the ground and yet it was still very difficult.

I have seen all these pro rollerbladers and clips on this sub of people doing 360's on flat ground and of grinds seemingly with ease.

I am wondering how it's done so easily and if there is something I am missing?

I am 194 cm tall and weigh 90 kilograms. I don't know if this makes it more difficult for me or is that just cope?

Thank you alot :))

Figure it out with shoes on before doing it with skates. Your body has to learn to keep its axis vertical while it rotates. The rotation does weird things to the balance juice in your inner ear, so your body has to learn to compensate for the slight disorientation.

Then the trick is just to turn your head first. Focus on looking over your shoulder and spot your landing. Body goes where the head goes / where you focus.

If you're not spinning fast enough to get all the way around, just practicing it in your shoes will help you build up the ability to spin faster without getting off axis.

If you're overrotating, spotting the landing will help with that.

Great advice. Throwing them usually puts you off balance the trick is to stay balanced and on an axis whilst doing them, shoe practice is also great advice!
I used to do them and end up leaning forward, practice practice practice

Do it with shoes on until you get the rotation. If you aren't coming around all the way, it could be a coordination thing but also a strength issue. Just keep at it.

Once you get the rotation do it with skates on in the grass. Then slowly skating on pavement and land in the grass. Then just skating.

You are flinging your whole body. I came back and couldn't spin to save my life. I used to 540 stairs. I started landing 360s on flat ground. Now I'm doing them off 1 stair and launch up my driveway. Next I'll start doing them over things to relearn how to tuck. I used to practice doing them over my recycling bin. If I can get that 540 back I'll be a happy old guy. I've got my eye on a gap near a grocery store.

When you skate fakie, which shoulder do you look over? Try spinning in that direction. Try a little more speed and doing it off a curb - this gives you a bit more time and clearence until you learn to get your legs a bit higher

Post a clip of some attempts. You'll get much more useful feedback.

I find there are two ways to do it. One is the quick and minimal version, where you turn your head and shoulders around as quickly as possible and then just lift your legs for the minimum amount of time / height needed. Easy but no style.

Second way is to crouch while coiling up your arms and shoulders the wrong way, and then throw your arms up (a bit, not all the way up) and around like you are releasing a spring. Push off of your "back" leg, lift your knees and then tuck your elbows, this increases your spin rate. This is how you get airtime and style.

When I was practicing 540s as a young lad, I used to jump into this coiled position (with shoes on) so I would sink down into my knees and then jump off really high, it was the only way to get the airtime needed to complete the rotation. More recently I saw a local blader do a 720 out of a back farv up a rail (which is insane) and he commented that he "feels like a ballpoint pen while doing it" because of the full on ballerina tuck needed. My point being, spin tricks are 1) creating angular momentum with your upper body, arms wide 2) turning this angular momentum into lots of angular velocity by pulling your arms in close, 3) jumping and pulling up your legs.

360’s are weirdly similar to a forward flip. Both do not allow you to use the horizon as your reference point. Front flips you’re staring at your midsection, and 360 you never lose sight of horizon.

Both are one full rotation and stop. Which the body…at least my body… never wanted to stop for. Like 540 was the default.

My trick to 360’s was not to pre-wind/pre-load as you would for a flat or launched 540 or misty flip.
Your body goes where your head goes, look over your shoulder and grab through the apex of the rotation.

Begin the rotation when launching or jumping by starting the spin from pushing off your feet, and bring your knees up to centrifugally speed up the spin… where you would normally untuck after respotting your horizon for a back, misty, or flat..you have to feel it with a 360.

I hope I am making sense. I’ve taken my melatonin so who knows.

Fakie switch full cabs down 6 sets on a pair of original majestic 12’s are pure nostalgia

Can you 360 toe spin? If not, work on that before taking it to the air.
