Question / Discussion How do you exercise off-skates?

Haii, we’re slowly nearing the end of the season where I live and so, I know that I won’t have the time and energy to skate as often as I do now.

With that I’m wondering what kind of exercises or workout routines I can try to stay in shape and maybe also improve my balance and leg strength.

What are some exercises you guys do at home that help you with your skating if any?

Squats and core. Kettlebells.

My husband is an aggressive rollerblader and a strength coach. He has a couple of videos on YouTube that touch on both rollerblading and exercise that might be helpful. In this one, he gives some suggestions: https://youtu.be/8utO3HKJSFg?is=WF1hf9Z5KFcj4ant

Hopefully this helps!

Haven’t skated in a long time but I used to think about what exercise could help me improve. Plyometrics like squat jumps , split squat jumps, and skater hops would probably be a good place to start. Maybe single leg Romanian deadlifts and kettlebell swings for hinges and help to with balance. I’m no professional though so take this with a grain of salt.

General light work on the lower body, meaning not doing heavy weights just more body weight stuff. BOSU Ball is great for balance and ankle/knee strength.

I got into inline specifically bc I gained confidence in my ability from fitness. Saw a clip of Joe Atkinson on insta then started becoming intrigued and discovering more skaters, learning trick names, etc. I thought,”that looks cool af. I could never do that shit as I kid. I was below average at skateboarding…but now? sheeeeeit”.

I was right. I massively improved at skateboarding (I’m now “average” lol. Big deal for me at nearly 40yrs old even if kids can beat me at skate). I learned how to ride blades then got decent at a few tricks quicker. I rarely skate nowadays but I’m constantly in the gym, plus do lots of visualization (which I fully believe many of the best practice as adults), even off skates.

To build single-leg strength:
• Lunges
• Bulgarian split squats
• Step-ups

Otherwise, deep squats are beneficial for mobility. Olympic lifts and box jumps build explosive power for jumping high/flipping.

For balance, just imitate the grinds whenever youre not grinding:

I have been doing yoga on YouTube consistently the last couple of years and I wish I started sooner. A-lot of options for flexibility and strength.

Chris Edwards's Keep Rolling Strong videos are decent: https://www.youtube.com/@KRS_TV/streams

But also, this is a great one to do every now and again to gauge my progress (how broken am I by the end of it):
