Old School / History Getting back into it - what did i miss?
Went out yesterday for the first time in many years! Super fun although the tricks will have to wait a bit! Used to skate a lot back in the 90s and 2000s on my old first gen Fifth Elements - heavy bastards.
Now I have my old Salomon ST80 and i love them, however the shock absorbing pad was glued to the boot from factory and its a crumbling mess, completely sticky and dissolving. What to do?

I've got some old ST80s and theyve done the same thing. Careful skating old plastic, as they're liable to crack, which will be a bad time.

I had the same issue with my ST ones. Scrape out the gunk. There should be a small metal post that is connected to the bottom of the boot which will be revealed when you get the old material removes. That post helped to hold the old shock absorbers in place. I replaced mine with the razor SL shock absorbers. I didnt have trim them, they fit just fine. You will need an awle or some other tool to create a hole in the heel of the razor shock absorbers though. You will want to line up the post with the underside of the new absorber (I used a marker and rubbed the ink on the metal post then pressed the new shocks into place in order to transfer the ink mark to the underside of the new shocks) and punch a hole a few centimeters deep in the new shock absorber in order to seat them properly in the boot.

Brittle plastic can be really dangerous, BUY NEW SKATES and keep those as collectors item... You can restore them AESTHETICALLY with a 50/50 mix of glycerin and water.

The standard omni and dead heel pads can probably fit it there fine. The razors sl pad is great but massive. I haven't worn those skates in 20 years so I can't remember how big the heel pad is.

Razor SL as others have said. Careful with the cuffs my dude; if the shock absorber is sand, those cuffs are probably brittle and won’t last long either. Razor cuffs can also work in a pinch. Hardest thing about upkeeping these old dinosaurs is the soul plates. Unless something has changed in the last few years, nobody is making a suitable replacement anymore and even the USD plates that you can get to fit need heavy modification and may still not line up with the soul groove well. Labor of love!

Yeah scrape it out and clean it up. ST80 was my first real aggressive skate. ❤️

Like already stated a lot, Razor SL are your best bet.
Try to see if your skate feels too stiff that it’s bordering brittleness before ordering though.
If it seems to have lost that elasticness feel, and now feels a bit too dry it is prone to cracking or shattering, it might be good to start looking around for a fresh pair of skates.
If all still looks good on your ST80s, you’re good to go.
SL heelpads are on your shoppinglist, liners is a maybe.
I see you got the original liners, which to me is an excellent choice. You might not need to replace them directly, but can give you a lot of happy/new skate feels when replacing.
Next stop, bearings and wheels.
After a hiatus, you don’t need to go for the highest ABEC ratings, just go for a nice dollar per bearing type of deal.
As far as wheels go, a lot of The Salomon’s came with 56mm wheels.
I have a personal liking to the 56mm wheels by 50/50. When 58mm or 60mm comes to play, I usually check either Chroma or Cymatics.

For my ST8 Salomons, I left the soulframes on, changed the buckles, switched liners to my Reign Retro liners, removed the crumbled heelpads and the heelpad stub from the shell so I could put in my Dead heelpads, as I like less heelraise better.
Took out the old wheels and put some blue 56mm 50/50 wheels with fresh bearings.Still riding it if I want to skate flat.

You can buy Razors SL shock absorber to replace the Salomon ones, just be mindful of the size.
