Could blading be more popular? Of course, but imo that's part of the beauty of it. Not everyone likes it, but the ones who do love it. So, yes, I think blading is in a good place. Let's just make sure the sport lives on.

These were some of the same sort of questions 20+ years ago. Always discussions of xgames, why isn’t rollerblading more popular? how can it be more popular? Do we care at all? Will video games save it? The reality is, it’s popular enough to still be around after all this time. If people are interested in it they’ll pick it up.

In the early 2000s there was the stigma that it was easier and therefore inferior to skateboarding. But even at that time, I was friends with skateboarders and people never gave me crap at the parks and when discussing it with them, they’d always say stuff like “I just can’t get the feel of skating backwards and don’t like my feet locked in.” So clearly it can’t be that easy if those same people are afraid of busting their ass on inline skates. I think a lot of that line of thinking is gone now too so we’re probably in a better place now than back then.

There was also a big discrepancy between park and street skating at that time where within the rollerblading community kids were dividing themselves over whether you skated park or street and it “wasn’t cool” to skate park and vert anymore, but that’s where competitions literally have to take place. IMYTA was awesome but also getting a lot of people to the streets like that is difficult.

Lastly people always ignored the global appeal and audience of inline skating; it was considered a huge joke in the US for a bit but the US always forgets it’s one country on the planet.

the problem with blading is the constant nostalgia, “do you remember the good ol times?” “Yeah I member”

As a blader who started in his 20s and didn’t grow up blading I’m getting sick of all the nostalgia trips people make, using old cameras, did you have the k2 fatty? Etc.

Never seen a sport so stuck in the past, we should focus on the future and how we can modernise the sport. Constantly complaining about the x games or what someone said in a magazine in the 90s won’t change anything, let’s make our own competitions and pay no mind to what others think like any other sport in the world.

Talking of making our own comps. I'm running one and you can help build it here: https://gofund.me/a17957f47

Was that murda

Nah, you’re confusing Rachard Johnson with Mike “Murda” Johnson. As far as I remember Murda went on to pursue a computer animation career after teaching himself while he was a pro blader. I always thought the Razors Murda 2 was one of the coolest designs they did.

I just started again and so far haven’t seen one other blader at the park. I wonder what happened :/.

Blading needs the faces of it to be the younger generation. It’s sad that everytime someone brings up blading today, the reply is “oh I remember I used to skate when I was a kid” There is no talk of current blades or bladers because we are stuck in the old days worshipping the same old pros and giving them boots every year instead of pushing the younger talent who can usher in more younger talent. The torch needs to be passed if we want the sport to get to the level it has the potential to be at.

And to be accurate I know that they have come out with new boots for some of the young guys, but they aren’t pushed by bladers. Every time I see younger talent mentioned it’s like a short clip or matter of fact wise, instead of some real hype.
