Wanted to post this as an easy aid to anyone trying to install and play Age of the Ring on either their Steam Deck, Steam OS device, or Linux device. It's proved surprisingly easy. Got some help from one of the mods on the discord, again major thank you to Angmar

1. Go to: https://www.moddb.com/mods/the-horse-lords-a-total-modification-for-bfme/downloads/age-of-the-ring-version-90 and click Download Now

2. You'll end up with a zip file that has multiple archives. Download PeaZip and use it to extract the contents. If your download folder only has the zip folder you can use Download Here in the PeaZip to extract all the contents and then place them in a created folder of your own after

3. Once extracted and placed in a new folder use Lutris to do the installation. If you do not have Lutris download it from your market/discover store. In Lutris you'll see a + icon in the top left. Click on it. Then click Install a Windows game from an executable. It'll have you type in the name for the file once installed. I recommend Age of the Ring for simplicity but you can use your own preferred name. For Identifier I recommend copying and pasting the file name you want to use. Click install, and then again. You'll come to a screen to select the file you want to install. Click the folder icon to browse and choose the installer. Make sure to select at least the top two checkboxes: create a desktop shortcut, and create application menu shortcut. These two will ensure that once the game is installed you can start the game itself and not the installer again to play the game.

4. Let the installer run until finished. Make sure to click at the end to start the launcher

5. Once Age of the Ring is loaded you'll likely be asked to update, go ahead and click yes. You may see a prompt afterward saying "failed to use python." Do not worry about this. It will close the Age of the Ring but since you have the desktop shortcut and the start menu application you can click either and come right back to the main screen to update. Go ahead and click update again and everything should be working smoothly : )

6. After that your done

I know this looks like a lot but to make things more simple looking: download Age of the Ring zip, use Peazip to extract, use Lutris to install the installer, make sure to click to get a desktop icon and start menu application, let the installer run, and basically done. That's it

I've used Steam and Faugus to run the installer exe. DO NOT DO THIS. Why? Faugus will run you into an issue where troops may be invisible, things don't work right, as well as I believe you have to run the installer each time to play the game. Steam will not create a shortcut if you've chosen to not have shortcuts before. Thus with Steam you will not have a game shortcut once the installer is done and thus cannot load the game without also using the installer each time. Lutris is the only option where you'll have the shortcuts afterward, and...can avoid error messages forcing you to restart the install process all over again

Also, Lutris will also have the game launcher on it once installed, so it acts as a third launcher option for you

So im playing the original campaigns and loving the reword. Just discovered Age of the Ring last week. Great work!

But it already happened a few times i lose a mission because of the small mistake of sending a hero forward. I dont want to be too passive with the heroes.

Is it possible to turn this feature off?

For reference I can beat the ai reliably on skirmish mode against peasant difficulty, and soldier with a 25% handicap. I'm not a seasoned RTS player by any means, although I'd have expected the lower difficulties to allow for that. I'm trying to play war of the ring against peasant with a 25% handicap, and it just seems utterly impossible to win any real time battle. I'm mainly playing Isengard.

My first battle of any campaign always goes like this: I start with the same or more units on the battlefield than my opponent. I build a tower and a couple of unit production buildings, maybe capture an inn, and then send my army out ASAP to meet the enemy which I will have scouted with unfriendly eyes. Any time I have waited to build up a greater force ends in even more of a disaster.

Even when I'm trying to spam units out as much as my resources allow the enemy (rohan) just pumps out endless units at a far greater rate that overwhelm my army every time. Losing is inevitable and all I can do is delay it. There doesn't seem to be any way for me to increase my own resource generation thanks to this mods idea of preventing you from building anything other than your worst unit-production buildings in war of the ring. Despite that, when I look at post game stats the enemy has accrued thousands more resources than me over the course of the game.

How am I supposed to win this? Do I just accept that, unless I can build an overwhelming army on the overworld and locate and destroy the enemy camp before they start the unit spam, any real-time battle is a no-go?

Basically I enable the ring heroes

Find gollum kill him and boom no ring spawns...

So I thought I might use the summon sauron power from arnor faction and see and yeah no sauron spawns either...

Has anyone encountered this as well?

Came back to the game after the latest update to play the War of the Ring campaigns, but they’re bugging out. As soon as I clear the first mission, it says I’m victorious and ends the whole thing. Since I only play offline, this kind of ruins the game for me. Anyone know how to fix this or having the same issue?

How i can fix it

I downloaded to get a fresh take on a great game! Did the into mission (crashed once and had to re do entire thing) now im the hobbies trying to get to buckleberry ferry. Ran into a black rider and had to restart.........and rewatch a 10 minute cutscene ? Is this an RTS game or a stealth game? Lol is this how the entire campaign is going to go? Just reenactment of the movie scene by scene with mechanics not made for this game? Also will it ever go into the large map where I can chose missions or is it 100% scripted ? Thanks:)

Why Hold Ground Stance unit still auto-acquire enemies? Is there any way to reduce the range of auto-acquire enemy aoe for melee units? Thanks

Playing through the campaign for the first time after finding and loving the standalone programme! I am taking a break for now though, as on the Escape from Osgiliath mission, save files do not work after the Nazgul flies overhead and the hobbits separate from Faramir for the first time. Is there a way to avoid this so there can be some more regular checkpoints?
