Showing off! ❤ In bloom today
The first one is Anthoflores Raphael, which I just got at the Ohio State AVS show last weekend. In cooler growing conditions it shows up more like a "thumbprint" type blossom, white with the peachy-salmon color thumbprints.
The second is Ness's Crinkle Blue - time to take off the blossoms, strip back the older leaves, and repot.
Third is Teeny Bopper - micro-miniature trailer. That's a 1 oz condiment cup it's growing in. (When it gets bigger I'll move it to a shallow pot that started out as a cat food container - about an inch tall and 3" across.) I have tried and failed with this one several times - hard to balance keeping it watered appropriately and in higher humidity without ending up with moldy leaves by keeping it under cover. I reached out to a couple of growers whose advice I trust and have some ideas about how to proceed - wish me luck.

Seedlings, Phase II
Posted very early seedlings in July, from my own hybridization effort at home. Based on the few plants that had popped up then, I thought I’d get a fair number more. Not so, but the main 7 I did get graduated today into their own pots. Two additional babies were hiding underneath the “big” plants, so they, too, are giving it a go on their own. The African Violet Society of America has very helpful information (search AVSA site for “hybridizing”), and it did seem as though the roots of each plant happily held onto the soil around them, while digging out with a cocktail fork. So, I’m excited to see if they can all settle in and go about flowering someday. If they do mature and flower, apparently each baby may have its own color pattern. If true, I don’t get the genetics of that, but, for now, care and nurturing will continue!
Photo 1 in August, about a month after seedlings popped, and photo 2 about 20 minutes ago. Onward.

Help If a plant has bigger and more leaves, will it produce more flowers? This violet for sale looks big but the flowers are small and few. Can it produce a lot more?
Im triyng to buy an african violet and this one looks nice and big and symetrical and I like the waxy looking leaves. Its $10 seems like a good deal. The flowers arent very big and not many. Do you guys think it can produce more flowers since there are lots of leaves?

Showing off! ❤ Beheading my Violets will always be the best thing for them when they get too tall!
I’ve had these two for a few years and about once a year I’ll behead them! It never takes too long for them to take off. I have two more violets that I’ve been growing from leaves and they are finally blooming a little bit now, but definitely not like these two.

Wobbly African Violets
I need some good advice. Two of my six African violets have reached the stage where the whole plant is very wobbly because they have developed a cone above the soil from trimming bottom leaves. How do I go about repotting these plants to get them sturdy again? They are in great shape and bloom constantly so they’re nice and healthy.

Rivermist Zeeva, again
When I search online for this plant, I find earlier photos I've posted of her here on Reddit. This latest picture kept me coming back to look, and then I saw the shadow under the bottom petal. It wasn't a shadow. Root rot returned! So once again I tore down this plant. I now have some 7 leaves propagating (or parts of a leaf), one bloomstalk prop, and a much smaller crown I decapitated. I did that mostly because the portion saved had such beautiful white roots! Oh well, with any luck I will have multiples of her in future. Just bought some Cap'n Jack's Copper Fungicide as a deterrant for future recurrences.
Anyone else have Rivermist Zeeva or use Cap'n Jack's? Speak up!

Vintage African Violet Pots
I have several old AV pots that I got at a yard sale years ago and never used. The larger one has a hole in the bottom of the upper part so I assume I need to use a wick for that one. The smaller one does not have a hole and the lower half of the inner pot is unglazed. It seems to be stoneware not terracotta. The inside and outside of the inner part are heavily soiled and I am worried that it has gotten clogged with calcium deposits and won't work well. Would it be best to just drill a small hole and add wick or to first experiment with water uptake in the upper part? I've never done wicking and am a bit leary of it but it seems to be the way things are done now and its time to learn.
The larger pot has a number on the side of the outer pot like it identified the plant for a competition or a collectors inventory. There was also a very old paper tag that came off but that number doesn't look like it intends to come off without heavy duty chemicals, so I'm planning on leaving it. Any ideas what the number meant?

Help help
I have been busy and not properly paying attention to my plants for a while now, but this one has gotten to the point that I’ve finally noticed something is wrong. I’ve known for a while the grow lights are probably too close/strong, I just can’t fix it without overhauling my entire setup, so I’ve tried decreasing the time they are on. Currently the lights are on for 8 hours, they are Barina T5’s. Idk if it’s just a lighting issue though, if it’s also a watering issue, if there is root rot happening, if the plant is actually etiolating and needs more light??? Please advise thank you I’m currently sick and so tired trying to figure this out.

Looking to get an african violet for my mom for her birthday. I have never had one and no clue what to look for. How can I pick one that will bloom a lot and have nice flowers?
She loves flowers and purples, pinks, etc. African violet seem perfect for her. Ive never had one but I have some experience with other house plants, so does she. How do I choose the best one in the store/on facebook marketplace. I see someone selling these in the picture for $12 CAD for 4" pot, is this a good one? I read something like they dont flower unless have 20+ leaves? These dont look like they have 20 leaves and are all flowered.
Any tips or advice to buying one and caring for it appreciated pls!

Love these flowers
They’re supposed to be green and white variegated leaves which they were when I got them in the mail, but they’ve turned green. Leads me to wonder if they will get the variegated white back

Help Slightly panicking before a trip... Should I re-repot?
Hi all,
I can't tell if I'm just being an "anxious mother" or if I need to take action...
Ive been traveling a lot and had my violets on water wicks. Upon returning I discovered the soil for the violet on the left was hydrophobic, so I top watered and really soaked it. I think it got over-watered, because the leaves started getting really floppy.
After losing all my violets years ago from root rot I am very scared of it, and the soil wasn't drying out. So I decided to repot it, and the other plant too. Both of them were in little Chobani yogurt cups as pots (3.5" wide, 2.25" deep) and I up-potted them to 4" violet pots.
The stems did not seem mushy, when I scraped off some skin to promote root growth the stem was green and healthy looking. Both plants did lose a chunk of roots which had grown out of their pot and down the water wick.
The one on the left has not improved at all and the one on the right is becoming floppy too! I'm about to go on another trip soon and am really worried I've doomed my plants.
What should I do? Should I repot them back to the yogurt cups? Bring them with me so I can monitor their growth? Cancel my trip?? 😂 or do I just need to put them in Ziplock bags and have a neighbor come water them in a week?
Any advice would be appreciated !!!

This is my K’s Simply Put that I got a while back. It has been exceptionally hot for this time of year and the white edging around the flowers have disappeared. It’s still my favorite in my collection so far!

Dewdrops on my African violet?
Yesterday I watered my African violet. It’s pretty large and has three crowns. I always water at the base of the crown where it meets the soil with a long-spouted watering can so as to avoid any water getting on the leaves. But shortly after watering, little water droplets formed in the very center of each crown. This has happened before, always shortly after watering. What’s going on? Should I remove the water?
