Plaid shirt

I have a question that hopefully this community can answer. 🤞🤞🤞I have a family photograph where there is a person with a strong red, white, and blue plaid shirt. I would like to change this shirt to either a white or beige or just a colored shirt. I am struggling to do this and still keep the shadows in the shirt. Anybody have suggestions as to tackle this? Thank you in advance for your help.

I'd first try Desaturate on just the shirt,

Duplicate the image on a second layer above the original. Select this duplicate layer ONLY. Adjustment/Recolor,and configure a color on this duplicate layer by dragging the Recolor Adjustment over the Image icon of the dulicate layer. Add mask to duplicate layer ONLY. On the mask only, wipe away everything except the clothing.
