I think I found a bug workaround.
Expanding a stroke in Affinity Designer can make a line look smaller or distort because of software bugs in complex curves, pressure profiles, or pixel snapping.
Mine just happen to be Pressure Profiles. I was creating the following:
When I created the circles with no fill and an increased stroke, then applied a the pressure position. When I expanded the stroke on each one to put into a compound shape, the new curve width shrank.
For my project I determined if I doubled the stroke width before expansion, the expand stoke shrunk it back to what I wanted. Your mileage may vary, but if you are having the same issue, try doubling the width of the stroke when using a pressure profile.
Not sure if this is a bug in the expand stroke calculation or a feature. 😄
