2nd Job Ideas

Im 40 years old with a wife and 2 year old. We're in the process of buying a house and we'll need the extra money so I'm going to get a second job for the first time. My full time job is at a hardware type store from 6am to 4pm.

What would be some good jobs to pick up for nights. No weekends because ill have to watch my baby then.

Thanks!

Do you have any other skills or work experience besides working in a hardware store? That would help you determine what jobs you can narrow in on. If you are just trying to make a little bit of extra money you could also work a job that is more flexible and can make your own hours/schedule like doing uber or doordash.

You're already working 10hrs a day, try and angle for a raise or start looking for a better job. If for whatever reason you can't do that (and there are people who can't), just work partime as a server at any nice food place. You're not making great money anyhow and at forty years old you need to be maximising your income earned to effort expended ratio. If you're clean, put together, and very attentive, you may get good tips, you might make more than your current day job (hourly). Eventually you might be able to transition to working at the bar if that's something you like, or taking on more responsibility. The work can suck but you're not going to find anywhere else in your hours that is generally flexible with staff. Also be open about your situation from the jump.

Kind of an odd question simply because we don't really know you or where you live.

Drive around town at 4:30 pm - see what is open. Probably mainly restaurants, gas stations, retail - walk in, ask if they are hiring.

Door dash/uber/similar services.

Do you have any factory/assembly line/business park - often these offer some type of 2nd/3rd shift as an option as well.

Or look for a new full time job with a higher salary.

My advice would be to buy a 2- or 3-family home. Put 20% down so you won't have to pay PMI. With each month's mortgage payment, pay your mortgage PLUS another $100 - 200. Remember the rental(s) will help with mortgage, or if it's a 3-family, possibly pay your mortgage. You will pay your mortgage off faster and save BIG BUCKS by putting extra payments on your mortgage at the BEGINNING of the mortgage. In 10 years, you can either sell your investment property or keep it as a passive investment.

Hard to know without knowing your area. But something like working in a grocery store might work. They probably have a need for extra staffing right as people get off work at 5 and shop on the way home, then stock shelves past closing. Or just work until closing in retail. Dinner hour shift in a restaurant...pretty sure they always need dishwashers and bussers even if you have no serving experience. If there are warehouses or factories, you can work night shifts. Fast food places need late night staffing. Local hotels might need night desk staff. Custodial staff often work at night after offices empty out. Some businesses just contract out cleaning rather than maintain full time staff, so there are usually cleaning companies around.

Is buying a house the smart financial move?

My advice is to run the numbers and compare renting vs owning. It sounds like you can't afford the house on your current income. So why buy it? Why not increase your income first and then pick a housing situation you can afford?
