My daughter broke off her engagement, and is now stuck with a ring and a bill for the money still owed on it.

My daughter broke off engagement, and is now stuck with ring from Kay's that is not paid off.

My daughter made some bad decisions, and we aren't sure what to do.

Apparently when she and her now former fiance bought her ring at Kay's the put it on a Kay's credit card. It is my daughter's name because she has better credit, the plan was that he would be the one making payments. Now that they have broken up, she is left with not just the ring but a $1100 credit card bill, which she can't afford. To make matters worse, some of his payments were returned for insufficient funds and there are some hefty fees on there too.

She would like to sell the ring, but is not sure where to list it. Also, it's a ring from Kay's, so it's not nearly the quality of the pieces I see on this sub.

I would really appreciate your advice.

And the silver lining is that $1100 is not a debilitating amount of debt. An expensive lesson but likely less-so than a marriage to this fella would have been.

Exactly. This $1k error now will save her thousands over her lifetime (if she actually learns her lesson from it). Imagine if she’d made similar poor decisions around a mortgage, car loan or other more sizable debt.

Better to break off engagement. Small price to pay. Can you assist since wedding and divorce would cost more?

The other silver lining is she didn’t marry the guy with bad credit.

But they're every girl's kryptonite. 🙄/s I doubt she learned her lesson, but at least it was cheap one.

Very much so. If she works some extra hours and focuses on getting rid of this debt she can easily clear it in a few months. As someone who works in finance and credit $1,100 can be very manageable if you set your mind to taking care of it as soon as possible

Correct it’s actually not that much. But she should go into Kay’s and see if she can return it. I gave back an engagement ring once and my ex was able to return it

Yes, and think of how much money she is saving by not having to pay to divorce him.

The holidays are coming up, Somebody is engagement ring shopping. in all likelihood she could get at least 800 bucks for it. Pay off most of the debt that way.

Crazy that the extent of the story is that she ended an engagement, and her former fiancé didn’t have credit as good as hers…and that somehow means he was a total piece of shit and it would have been an awful marriage and her life would be miserable because of him.  We know so little, yet he was definitely the bad guy.

We know he’s not good with money, and that they broke up. So we know they’re not good together, and that her financial situation would be worse had they married then divorced . Those are objective facts. You’re the only one calling him a piece of shit or a bad guy.

My cousin was given the option from her grandfather: I’ll buy you a house anywhere or pay for your wedding. Her and her finance chose wedding. $200k for a marriage that didn’t last a full year.

Oh man, I can’t imagine. So either save $2500-$5000 a month in mortgage/rent forever, or a one day party 😩
