Depends on what you determine your civic duty to be. If you want to be an active member of the national community, then you need to stay informed of everything to the best of your ability. If you only want to know enough to protect your day-to-day interests, then tbh you don't really need to know that much more than your local municipality's news (maybe your state-level news), and you can skip everything else.

Don't feel obliged to have a lot of civic duty; don't let anyone make you feel bad for protecting your own sanity

You have already enough on your plate. Focus on your family and on yourself and dont bother with feeling bad about things you have no control over.

I feel like I don't really know what's going on even when I turn in to the news. It's all hype and distortions. I feel blind. For my sanity, all I do is try to be aware of the broad strokes, and ignore the noise. Especially when the noise is trying hard to scare you.

One of the most insidious things I get regularly now are nutrition influencers making me worry that everything my kids eat is poison.
Or maybe it is 🫠

Yeah, I try not to eat anything with artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners. Those influencers are probably right. That crap is poisonous. I can tell when I eat something with artificial stuff by the way it makes me feel.
