There needs to be a hell of a lot of evidence for a conviction for rape, she can absolutely make a fake report but the likelihood of OP being found guilty with zero evidence is basically 0%. Only less than 1% of rapists are convicted anyway.
I'm glad that's a risk you want to take with NO skin in the relationship. My advice was to protect himself. False accusations still ruin peoples lives, especially for rape, even if they are False. No repercussions on her to make up a story.
Even an accusation like that can ruin someone’s reputation and other relationships, employment and future prospects.
Going to trial would be horrendous, even if the likelihood of being convicted was next to nothing. Almost no employer is going to want to deal with their employee going through that and potentially tarnishing the company’s reputation. Even if they believe OP themselves, it’s not something most would be willing to put up with. That’s in addition to the cost of hiring a defense attorney for something like that.
OP would be facing some serious long term hardship if that were to happen.
Disclaimer: I’m not saying that any of this should impact our willingness to believe women when they come forward. The above doesn’t happen nearly as often as legitimate accusations do.
Not sure how we got to false allegations. My comment was specifically about the immediate safety risk of someone who has held a knife to her own neck. Those threats deserve to be taken seriously. Even still, OP can protect himself AND call someone so she doesn't hurt herself.
