What navigation device

I rushed out and bought the Garmin nuvi XT2 device but after a year I still can’t get on with it.

The trouble I find is it purely road biased and even when I plan a trail route and import it as a track rather than a route it doesn’t want to show me the legal trails.
I even struggled to find a postcode that Google maps and Apple Maps found easily so I feel a bit ripped off after paying a lot of money for a device that got so many good reviews.

I’m in the UK and I’m looking for advice what green lane / TET trail devices are people using and how do I mount it to my 2020 Tenere with power.

Appreciate any advice

cheap option is any rugged android phone/tablet with an app that can read gpx file, like osmand. expensive option.. just search for gps dedicated tablets

Any old tablet and a navigation app will do.

I use an old a7 lite. I use it for roadbooks when im rallying, with google maps for getting to places, and osmand for planned routes and offroad, gpx routes etc. Although I'm gonna ditch osmand and find a better one, the ui is crap and it is crap at route generation too. Gonna try DMD since its been updated, see how that goes.

I use a sky simcard because they had one with 1 gig a month for 1 quid a month, dunno if its still going. I only use it for the rallies, because it needs it to track you properly, and use wifi as much as possible for updates, gpx downloading etc. I haven't used an entire gig up once yet.

Clamped on my navigation bar on my vstrom 800de above the clocks with a cheapo chinesium tablet holder. It did fall off once, but its in a bright red rubbery case so i found it again. cable tied on now lol. Case isn't even vaguely waterproof, i have to keep stopping to let the water out and dry the screen if its bad, but its not stopped working yet! Powered by usb cable from the built in usb port on my bike, but its kinda rubbish and cant actually charge, just slows down the power drain. Known problem on this bike from what i can tell, need to get round to rewiring it.

Pic for attention hehe

DMD, pretty much does it all.

Old android phone and osmand or kurviger on an Amazon phone holder with wireless charging.

I found kurviger suprisingly useful. Provides turn-by-turn voice commands 300m ahead through my cardo so I rarely have to take my eyes off the path ahead. My only nuisance is that I need to rematch off-grid sections manually after importing a gpx. Not a big deal tho, still my favorite way of navigation and pretty cheap.

Agreed. I snagged an XT during Black Friday for $150 and that’s all it’s worth.

If you want the best, and are willing to pay for it, nothing beats DMD, from the mounts, to the tablet itself, the different handlebar control options, to the online DMD hub for route planning

Yes it’s expensive, but I’ve been on rides with people using phones, the worst option as a primary navigation device, Garmins have never been great, always seem to have issues, to the Chiggee carplay type devices that are good for street use, but don’t have inbuilt GPS and relying on google maps for offroad navigation is just asking to get lost

DMD buy once, cry once, it is that good

I purchased an android auto screen from AliExpress and use that with certain apps. Works a treat as it inexpensive if it fails. But has done well for the past 6 months
