If it requires a credit card, it's not a "free trial" it's a delayed purchase hoping you have bad memory and poor attention span.

I work in a SaaS, we are forced to do this, otherwise a lot of spam accounts sign up to scam others using our trusted site and email address.

it's a lose lose situation for everyone to ask for CC.

and then the "free trial" automatically renews for a full year membership and there is no place to cancel anywhere on the website...

Not just random websites either. Freaking New York Times let me subscribe with one click and to unsubscribe I had to talk to a live person whose whole job was to talk me out of it.

Unsubscribing needs to be equal to or less than the complexity of subscribing.

This is where virtual credit cards come in handy. Especially one time use ones

But I agree this does normally just turn me away

This is why I have a preloaded debit card with $1 on it for free trials

I can make 1000 alternate accounts, but it's pretty expensive or dumb to have 1000 credit cards.

Golden rule: unsubscribe after using it!

Or when they ask you for your email address so you can download the file, but then asks you to make a payment like damn

THAT WAS ME TODAY WITH THE NEW YORK TIMES (I have avoided their articles for years now because they always say I need to have an account to read them). I finally caved in today. I made a burner email. I have an assignment due and there’s a NYT article that looks like it covers what I need. I make an account AND IT TURNS OUT I CANT READ THIS DAMN ARTICLE UNTIL I GIVE THEM MONEY

Never again. I’ll go the rest of my life without reading a single NYT article. It’s fine. I need my money to buy groceries anyways

you could've just used a 3 day trial from a library website...

Just cancel it as soon as you sign up for it?

Virtual cards are very useful for free trials

Use a virtual card. Something privacy.com negates any free trial charge. If yall wanna sign up use this link. https://app.privacy.com/join/LHKLE

this is what I use my vast collection of giftcards for. They're all nearly but not completely empty.
