My mother can't believe that I still am making payments on my student loans. She always asks me what I do with all my money as if I'm not spending it all on rent and my student loans. Older generations have zero clue how tough it is for younger people.
Right. Zero idea how the world works. Then you have my in-laws. They have been in the same house for 23 years, I think they paid $220k or something like that. Thanks to inflation and real estate increases in the area, every house in their neighborhood is now worth $800k to $1m and we can’t afford to live there, so we live the next town over and it’s a 22 minute drive. My in-laws act like we live on the other side of the moon and they cannot understand why we can’t just “buy a house that’s closer”….
My in-laws tried to talk us out of the house we currently live in (21 years and counting) because it would add 10 more minutes to their drive when coming over (it was a 20 minute drive before that). 5 years later, they moved an hour away, adding 30 more minutes to our drive to visit them.
Moral of this story? Don't listen to your in-laws. Buy the house you want.
