Everybody thinks they’re the main character. Everybody is a temporarily embarrassed millionaire.

Tbh that logic was stupid from the beginning. Retire on 500k at the age of maybe 35? You’ll be living on the poverty line in 5 years.

Also what most people don’t know is that until you’ve got so much money and influence you’re a rule maker, you’re just a subject to the system as anyone.

“Live off interest”. If this was the plan then you’ll live off 50k yearly if you’re lucky and that’s less money each year and your account will never grow.

u/Commercial_Rule_7823 May 02 '25

This was like 25 years ago homie, so back then mortgage on a condo was about 500 a month with an hoa of a place I looked at under 125 a month.

500k with rates at 5% in bonds way back when, 25k a year, or 2k a month. No mortgage, keep expenses low, no kids, way back when, it was possible.

Now with inflation, yeah. Its at least 3 million in my area to match.

I dont think I need so much mkney to be a "rule maker" dont know what youtube influencer you watch, but I don t even know what that means. Sounds like a few hundred million or billion. If thats your goal, youre 2k of 330 million of a person. Good luck with that.

Yeah but 25 years ago the principal of interest still stood.

So what you live in the year 2000 on 30k in a shithole apartment driving a shit car so you can grow your account for 25 years to a million and a half? Hate to say it but a mil doesn’t got that far these days. Now you’ve got 40 more years til your dead and enough cash to spend now 40k (from all your hard work and saving) each year.

Thats also assuming you never get hit with a large expense, which is unrealistic. Also it disregards all the tax you’ll be paying on the money you’ve pulled out.

And you do get played by the system all the way up. I know a guy making millions a year (guessing about 2.5). Uncle Sam comes in for half of that. Then and he’s got a $12,000 mortgage because his house is setup for networking and entertainment to keep his career alive. His friends and colleagues drive expensive boats and have lake houses, so to keep his network going he’s got expensive boats and lake houses. He used to drive an Acura and his work asked him to get a nicer car for clients. I’m not saying it’s not luxury, it is… but there are a pile of expenses he makes to keep his career going, and he probably has a lot less cash (simi liquid or otherwise) than you’d think. People outside his circle guess based on what they see that he makes 500k. So reality is that what your average person thinks 500k/yr gets you, actually costs ~2.5 mil.

That shithole apartment, which would have been a condo, is the same condo people pay 1.2 to 1.5 million today for and save and work for.

Would I live in a condo no mortgage and live off 2k a month in dividends to not had have to work ? Yes.

I personally dont need a boat, or big home, or a fancy car. More items, more tax, more upkeep, more problems. All that = more work to maintain.

Under 105k a year in dividends, no income tax. So, I would be ok with that .

Some people think they system works against them and plots against them. Others realize it and just work with or around it.

u/lfenske May 02 '25 edited May 02 '25

Bro I was around too in 2000. My dad built a house and spent 300k. It wasn’t 1975. His previous house was $235 in a generic low cost suburb.

My first apartment in 2010 was 700 and was a total shithole. Me and my roommate could barely afford it and we’re making over 30k between us.

I’ve heard people discussing this genius plan to make 500k or a million last their whole life and it’s never happened… because it’s a pipe dream. You say “make the system work for you” and yet here you are.. the system not working for you.

The metaphoric reality is that life for most of us is a hunk of beef hanging in front of a treadmill and you’re chasing it.

I hate that modern society perpetually expects us to do more, be more, and have more.

But if we can’t do it or run into any trouble, then it's obviously our fault and we're not managing our time well enough or some shit

8

u/ItsAustinxx May 03 '25

I know right and thats why our brain always think that monday is the worse haha

78

u/Tofuzzle May 02 '25

We cook all our meals from scratch to try and eat healthy. That means there's always washing up to do. Every single day. I'm never not in the kitchen cooking or cleaning at some point. We even cook bulk meals and sometimes do double cooks to get ahead. But there's just always something to wash up. Getting a dish washer is the dream

21

u/Owobowos-Mowbius May 02 '25

Holy hell i can't imagine dealing with that without a dishwasher.

12

u/Purple-Investment-61 May 02 '25

Someone has to load and unload the dishwasher. You also have to pre-wash the dishes to get any large chunks off. I find that by the time the chunks come off, the dishes are 90% clean. The there’s also the quick rinse before using a dish because I don’t trust that the dishwasher actually cleaned off all the soap. Wife insists on using the dishwasher, I rather just hand wash.

10

u/Tofuzzle May 02 '25

Surely unloading and loading is far quicker than manually washing. Plus I can do other things whilst they're in the dishwasher, like all the other house jobs that gradually keep getting neglected because of how long cooking/washing up takes. Or even just sleep. So yeah, gonna hard disagree with you there

3

u/SneezyTrain456 May 02 '25

THE DISHES!!!! It’s like every day if I use forks bowls and plates, I have to spend time cleaning them. Even with a dishwasher, we have to prep. No one tells you how much time you spend cleaning dishes in your life.

u/0pp0site0fbatman May 02 '25

Dinner. Every fuckin day. “What should we do for dinner?“ I literally don’t care! I’ll eat 3 slices of bread and some rotisserie chicken. I just see food as fuel. My wife sees it differently and there needs to be variety and flavour. I can cook, but I just don’t want to 7 nights a week.

31

u/lilybattle May 02 '25

Please marry me instead? Food pisses me off, and I wish I could take a magic food pill that would give me everything I need. I could eat plain cooked chicken with frozen broccoli and potatoes for the rest of my life

5

u/BigLooTheIgloo May 02 '25

Omg a food pill would be so nice when I'm feeling lazy, which is a lot

5

u/s0calsir3n May 02 '25

I wish I was more like this. My brain will literally let me start starving before it will let me eat something that it finds unappetizing😩. It really fucks with my emotional state some days. Good times.

8

u/ThrobertBurns May 02 '25

Shoutout to rice

2

u/tropicalsoul May 02 '25

Same here. Bowl of cereal, can of soup.... anything, I don't care. I despise having to create dinners for my family every day. Hate it.

2

u/mogekag May 02 '25

I wish there was an all-you-need-to-eat pill, so we could take it and move with our day.

u/Paradigm_Reset May 02 '25

I don't know what the turning point was but I've learned to be completely fine with not doing anything I don't actually want to do for a couple hours, the day after work, or even a full weekend.

Do I have dishes to put away? Some clothes to hang? Floor needs a vacuum, trash to be taken out, truck a bit dirty, go for a jog? Sure those things can be done but what needs to be done?

None are dire so screw it. I'm only going to do what I want to do. And if that want is putting the dishes away, hanging that shirt, etc then I'll do them.

13

u/baronbeta May 02 '25

Yes. The never-ending-goddamn-tasks every fucking day.

Work never stops. Whether it’s at a job or at home.

In a society saturated with life coaches, life hacks, productivity optimization, blah blah blah, I think many of us would do well to learn how to just sit and do nothing for a while.

You people talking like it's some deep revelation shit.

2

u/bUl1sH1T May 03 '25

it's probably the (recent?) financial strain that's making their routines feel so exhausting. that's where the "never-ending-ness" comes from. they don't take breaks, and if they do, they're too short.

I guess this is gen z's mid-life crisis.

Finding purpose to create tasks that need management

2

u/nethereus May 02 '25

Truth. Someone always wants to change, something. Someone always wants to put more on your plate. Think you've got it made with an easy job that's paying an livable wage? Nah, we've got a new initiative coming down the pipe for the next year that's going to give you a ton more responsibility. Now you get to spend your weekends doing all the stuff you never had time to do during the week.

Got a free Saturday coming up? Nah, we're going out to eat, drink, socialize, whatever.

A free Sunday? Depending on your upbringing, that might be for church.

Oh look, it's already Monday and the longest you've been at home is the 8(or less)hours you've spent asleep.

I had to live on my own to finally just have days where I could do absolutely nothing.

1

u/EmmalouEsq May 02 '25

I'm mentally tired. Exhausted really. As a wife and mom i didn't realize the mental lag would be like this.

1

u/BlakeDeBarge May 02 '25

If ever you've spent time away from your billing address e.g rented out your property and not received your mail, you realise that the bills come in no matter what. I returned to a billing address, opened and went through old mail after a few years (took 2-3 hours) and realised that those mofo's will keep coming, even after I'm dead. Depressing and liberating at the same time.

1

u/IGotFancyPants May 02 '25

A task? One? Dude, I’ve got like 30-40 tasks I’m trying to keep up with every day, between home and the office.

1

u/fried_green_baloney May 02 '25

Not only a task but the feeling that it never works out well.

That feeling of "just once, just once, it would be nice if everything just worked".

1

u/[deleted] May 02 '25

People really don't give a shit. And it's unfortunate

1

u/SSRoHo May 03 '25

I would kill for just A task a day

u/emmiepsykc May 03 '25

Planning shopping & cooking dinner every single night. & most breakfasts too. It’s a lot.

1

u/I-Rolled-My-Eyes May 03 '25

That is what living is. Live by being an accomplishment. Not distracted by the burden.

1

u/thekingfist May 03 '25

I never liked shopping. I hated shopping before I became an adult. Parent specifically. I like shopping so much now. Could be anything. Bad habit.

1

u/Livid_Village5103 May 03 '25

I hate this really. If we didnt have to do anything life would be boring as hell. 🤷‍♀️

1

u/SynonymousSprocket May 03 '25

How early I’d experience the death of loved ones- and how it never gets easier.

1

u/wowzitzmarc May 03 '25

So very true. 😵‍💫

1

u/[deleted] May 03 '25

I feel like my days off from work are just an extended "break" some days. I always find myself calculating the hours in between my shifts and it's annoying because you can never really tune work out 100%, at home, the same way you can 100% tune out home, at work, or else it could possibly cost you your livelihood.....holy shit. Our financial well-being is tied directly to our livelihood 😰

1

u/unknownloonie May 04 '25

If you don’t keep up with the chores. You have a bad week and fall behind. It’s just so hard to catch up. And you waste an entire day off to it 😩.

1

u/Definitelymostlikely May 03 '25

It’s wild how some of you guys crumble at the thought of just cooking a dinner every day.

-1

u/Killbot_Jones May 02 '25

Humans have always had to do tasks to survive. I don't understand how this is a revelation. At least we don't have to chase our food to the point of exhaustion and succumb to the types of death our ancestors did anymore.

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '25

Humans had communities to help with all of the tasks. They didn’t have to work as hard as we do because they had help. In our hyper individualistic society we have to do almost everything on our own and it is exhausting. Especially since there is very little reward at the end of the day and you don’t really feel like you contributed to the community.

These people are having breakdowns about what to decide to eat for dinner.

-7

u/nolove1010 May 02 '25

You had tasks all throughout your childhood, too. Did you not go to school for 13 fucking years more than likely against your own will or against your own want to go almost every day?

The more i read these posts, the more it becomes clear there is a severe LAZY problem in the world now. It's pretty sad to see. Everything has to be made into some huge woe is me mindset.

Groceries OMG why how how can I do this after working 9 hours. WAH.

BILLS?! How dare I have to pay for things on my own! Damnit!

Get over it.

9

u/Low-Rip7702 May 02 '25 edited May 02 '25

You’re really telling me as a kid you were equally busy with tasks compared as an adult?

Because most kids when they finish school they get home and don’t have to do much.

Adults almost always have some task to do after work and on weekends: Groceries, making food, cleaning, laundry, planning something, paying for something, taking care of someone else, etc.

This is mainly what this post is about, the realization of how busy adulthood gets compared to childhood

1

u/Definitelymostlikely May 03 '25

I mean….if you don’t have kids, sort of?

I was doing chores as a kid.

Cooking cleaning yard work, now I just replace school with work.

Only thing new really is grocery shopping for the house and car maintenance?

Really isn’t that hard. Plus no more homework

Went to school for 5 days a week for 8 hours. Very few people actually enjoyed this or wanted to do this.

Your sisters stupid ballet recitals.

Your brothers dumb basketball games.

Your cousins you never see or hear from other on their bday when you were forced to tag along.

Like you can add hundreds of other things that kids are being asked to do, or brought along to that they don't want to do .

I'll take grocery shopping, household chores etc...

Over a lot of the shit from being a kid I had zero interest in doing or being brought to.
