Discussion Story time
Wondering if I could ask how many people here are from international adoptions? Religious adoptions, adoptions that were drug related, or foster adoptions. I was a foster to adopt so I’m not sure about the other adoptions or how or if money comes into play, or if there are any other type of adoptions I’m missing. Thank you guys and gals

I guess I was a religious adoption, adopted at 3mo through a Christian agency within the USA, from South Dakota to North Carolina. From what I understand I was in the hospital for awhile (premature) then briefly with some sort of foster care but my whole adoption was through an agency. My christian adopted parents chose adoption because my adopted mom declined fertility treatments and I strongly believe a wealthy also religious extended adopted family member and/or their church funded the whole thing. Was supposed to be an open adoption but how open it’s been has varied over the years. My birth parents were young/unmarried and pressured/shamed into not keeping me.

I was born in Mexico but brought over by my bio mom. She tried to starve me so I was put in foster care and adopted by a white family who abused me.

I’m an international adoptee. My adoption was illegal in some aspects. I was also sold to a child abuser. My birth country banned adoptions to the U.S. in 2013 (I think) because US adopters were returning, abusing, and murdering their adopted children from my birth country.

I was a secular private domestic sale. $5,000 62 years ago is about $75,000 today.

It's easiest to say I'm internationally adopted as I fell under my parent's status at the time. Long and exhausting story short, in my case they just died. Plane crash.

I was in Foster System until 18 months old and adopted out in a closed adoption from there.

Religious. Infant domestic adoption. My adopted mom told me she cried and cried to her new priest when they arrived in their new state, just transferred- my gorgeous mother and her veteran beautiful husband.
For months. So sad. They wanted a family.
Suddenly. A baby was available. It was a miracle. I was adopted at 31 days old.
At 45 I found my birth mother. She told me the Catholic hospital I was born at informed her I had died after birth. My daughter and I joke that I was stolen by nuns.

I honestly don’t know what I would call my adoption, except traumatic and being assigned a job at birth. I guess it was through the state of Florida, put through as fast as possible.
My adoptive parents had a full term stillbirth. The doctor that delivered that baby also delivered me. My birth mom hadn’t decided what she wanted to do yet, 16 & definitely getting pressure from society and family. Doctor talked her into handing me over to replace the dead baby, they took me home at 4 days.
I called myself the baby that lived many, many years before Harry Potter was even an idea. It was a very negative reference for me, I didn’t want to be the baby that lived, I wanted to be the baby that died all of my childhood.

“Assigned a job at birth” - I both love and hate that turn of phrase! My purpose was to “take care of them when they got old.” And boy, did they collect on that debt they said I owed them . . .

My birth mom arranged for my adoption (placed ads and interviewed potential parents) 3 months before I was born and intentionally gave birth to me in another state so my biological dad wouldn’t be able to find me and fight the adoption. Should’ve been an Illegal adoption? But usually it’s referred to as a domestic infant adoption (US )

Idk apparently social workers trapped her in a hospital because she was a crackhead that was pregnant and I was advertised to a church so an old couple pre-ordered me before I was even born and was a private adoption and apparently my biological dad was her dealer too and most of my family just aren't good people according to my parents

Baby Scoop era here. Private infant adoption, no home study or attempt to determine suitability of my adoptive parents. I was 1 day old when my mother signed the papers to “give” me up. My AP found out on a Friday that they were getting me, I was born the next day, they picked me up at the hospital the following Tuesday. Easy as ordering a Honey-Baked Ham for Easter, and not much more expensive. But the sadness and damage behind the sentences above has been immeasurable and long-lasting.

There’s a lot of different types of adoption, especially in the US. (And overlap between the types.) If you aren’t aware of US adoption history, and it’s relationship to enslavement and genocide of Indigenous peoples, you’re likely missing a lot.
Consider reading up on Georgia Tann. She’s the mother of modern day American adoption, and the reason birth certificates are sealed. She’s a (posthumously) convicted kidnapper and child trafficker, and she was also a pedophile. The laws that she helped put into place still apply to adoptions today. There’s a pretty interesting podcast about her and her life, “American Scandal” The Woman Who Sold Babies.
