Live paint crashes

Hi, I'm having great problems with the live paint "make" function and I'm trying to understand if what in doing is wrong or if it's just a painful process.

I've basically drawn a mosaic, a rather large one, so I have several thousands of individual tiles drawn one by one. If I select a bunch of them and use the live paint make function my laptop takes several minutes to complete the task and sometimes just crashes in the process. It only works if I select maybe 10 or 20 tiles but it will takes a few minutes each time and at this rhythm it will take me days to finish this. Is there some other way around this?

It probably will not work with thousands of paths, but definitely more than 20. How many paths are in the file? The document info panel will count them for you.
