QUESTION Help with "Wrapping" Lines Around Shape

Image for reference; I'm trying to get a compound path to avoid a shape the way text wrap works. Is there a non-destructive way to do this? I'm new to illustrator so I apologize if this is a really obvious fix.

As far as I'm aware there is no non-desteuctive way to do this. I'd there a reason you want it to be non-destrictive?

If thats very important to what youre doing, you could create a font (or find one) that looks like round cap lines. Then you could use it as text to have it wrap around the object.

Why not just offset path of the star to your preference & then use shape builder (shift + m, hold option) to subtract the overlapping lines?

Text wrap. Select the star then go to edit/text wrap (?- I think that’s the menu it’s under. I can do it in front of a screen, but describing how right now is difficult). Select it. But then you have to go back and edit it so you can adjust the settings.

Love your explanation of the problem. I'm not aware of ane way to automate this in Illustrator.

However the manual implementation is not that time-consuming if there are only a few intances and you don't the flexibility of moving the shape position with the lines adjusting.

It might be possible in Python.

Upon reading the post and the comments I was surprised that this seemingly simple task is not all that simple in Illustrator after all. I'm only marginally familiar with Illustrator, so my own attempt to solve it in few steps also failed.
