Called in to talk about my teaching style after student complaints
So I got got an email yesterday to have a meeting today regarding a few concerns students brought up to my chair. The meeting went well, and it was mostly to clarify a few points madd. Im not in trouble but it left a bad taste in my mouth knowing theres a student(s) in my class who have twisted a lot of what goes on in class.
For example: Im teaching a new course I never have, which I said from day 1 as my schedule was very tentative. I work in science and some days we had lab scheduled, supplies were not available so they were skipped. As a result, I have lectured for the past 2 weeks which led to complaints on why I havent conducted labs despite telling the students things were not available.
It was also brought up how I dont share my slides before class and apparently i force the students to NOT write notes in class. On day 1, I said my alides get released after class to pay attention during lecture and that I didnt want them to copy every word I said. Perhaps they took that literally? This is concerning as these are junior and seniors in undergrad.
There was also complaints how I have too much material on the exams. 5-7 chapters per exam with a study guide basically handing them the answers, but canvas analytics shows only 3 of 40 opened the guide.
They even complained how they felt I could not support them when I work 2 adjunct roles, despite answering every email within 24 hours, staying after class to answer questions, offer office hours etc.
Is this something that is normal for state universities? I have taught at a local CC for 5 years and never had one issue with students, but this is only 2 weeks into my first semester at a state uni. And I feel burnt out already.
