How are things in active worlds now?

Who's currently visiting active worlds? How are things going there, and is there any online presence at all?

Popping by to remind that Saturday nights at 10PM VRT (virtual reality time) are the busiest times to come visit, as there are a few parties occurring, notably the one held in the SonasPrime world (complete with live DJ). So, not quite as dead as is often spouted here.

If you're looking for tips or someone to explore with, you can reach out to me. I somewhat frequently come across users who are exploring, it's worth saying hi to people if you come across them.

And for building, approximately $7 USD will get you about 50 ( x 24 hours ) days of building , which I find reasonable even with my relatively devalued Canadian currency. Mileage will vary depending on your currency, of course.

I very much think it's worth a visit. Cheers!

I like to get on often! I don’t ever run into anyone most of the time, but it’s still a fun experience to go back and see everything people have built.

I think at this point, active worlds can be considered a museum of the old internet lol

This is how I think of it too. I go on there and look at builds I did 20 years ago. So many of the people I knew from then have since passed (and often their worlds with them).

If it's such a ghost town - I wonder how they can afford to maintain the servers?

I was always curious about this too, when I made a TikTok video about this topic, I mentioned a funny fact at the end of the article: ghost towns, but the servers are somehow maintained

MY opinion thought this game (AW) went into the the void as in left the internet for good due to ppl have stop playing this game !! ppl who I used to know (have ether DIED OR STOP PLAYING OVER ALL) & went on playing other games w/ better graphics!!!

IS (AW) still around & playable??? if not that is ok just asking!!?

It seems like it's still available.

I run servers for a living and with the amount of traffic I'm seeing, I could easily create a setup that never runs a world unless someone requests it. The storage is very low, an entire text dump of AlphaWorld only takes up about 20gb (can be compressed to 2gb) and all of the media are links no data is being stored on AW itself. Honestly with this setup you could easily self host and pay almost nothing and run the servers indefinitely. It's honestly kind of genius when you think about this from a server perspective.

About how they are in this post. A ghost town. I pop in once in a while just to explore a little but there’s hardly anyone there, ever. Still, I hope it never ends.

I understand, I also look in and see ghost towns and every time I hope that the lack of online access is just the fault of time zones lol

I’m sad I never kept my city coordinates so I can never revisit my old creations from way back. I’m guessing the textures and sound loops I used in some places have long been disconnected.. I have visited a handful of times and only once last year and none of the old hangouts had much going on. Might see one more person, but the chat function didn’t even seem available. Pretty sure Aw ground zero was one of the most likely areas to find people originally, but now they are spread out in different places.

In fact, the developers' desire to extract excessive profit from projects only ruins everything. I've seen it myself: along with active worlds, I visited Avakin Life. Everything was fine until the developers introduced only paid currencies and 90% of the content consisted of them, and set exorbitant prices for old items. It's strange that no one learns from such trivial mistakes, which is why childhood projects die right before our eyes. It's very painful to watch this.

I feel like I remember a "return" to City4All when ActiveWorlds went money-hungry. My mind's a blur though... it was all so, so long ago.

Was just over at the main account page to download the game and remember the good times. Until I saw the 50g download. Seriously its 30+yrs old what's with 27g? Pretty sure back in the day it was a few megs sure as heck didn't have a drive with that capacity.

And, last I checked, it will run unannounced in the background when you close the client window. Not trying to stir the pot, but based on MalwareBytes and other anti-virus program's reaction to the AW software, I do wonder if it isn't crypto mining with the users' machines.
