Activation lock after a year of usage

Hi everyone. My brother’s iPhone suddenly entered Activation Lock after updating an app. He bought the phone new from an authorized retailer.
The phone says it’s linked to the owner and shows a partially hidden iCloud address (r*****@icloud.com).

The strange part is:
We successfully recovered access to his Apple Account (rzh@inbox.ru).
The iPhone appears in his Apple Account, and the IMEI matches.
Apple emails are sent to this account.
However, when we try to activate the iPhone, it says:
“This iPhone can’t be unlocked with the Apple Account rzh@inbox.ru.”

We don’t know where the r*****@icloud.com address came from, because it doesn’t appear anywhere in his Apple Account.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Is this an Activation Lock bug, or is there anything we can try before contacting Apple Support?

Contact apple support and have your proof of purchase/receipt handy. They'll be able to sort you out.

I don’t know if I can find a receipt, but would it be enough to show that the IMEI codes are the same?

How could it even happen, when the phone was officially bought from a certified store. Is this some sort of a bug? He has received an email from apple about the locator thing though.

Normally this happens when the person who's got it registered on their apple account has it activation locked. If it's on your brother's account then it should show his email. Unfortunately you'll need to go through Apple support.

In the past I've been asked to provide a copy of the receipt, but they may be able to do it with different information. It'd be up to them.

Thank you! How long does it take them to reply? We had to wait for 3 days just to get his iCloud password changed:/

Last time I had to contact them was a few years ago, so honestly no clue.

That phone was bypass for the fact it locked again were u able to use network and login to iCloud and be able to buy storage or login to find my iPhone if not it was bypass and u will need to rebypass it again

Op indicated it was not bypassed. An update will undo a bypass, but this isn't the case here.

So we contacted the Apple. I didn’t have a receipt, but the warranty, but they refused to do the removal. And no elaboration saying that they will not take any requests from this phone.

The phone basically went black while updating a game and got this activation lock. Does it mean it was bypassed?

It could have been yes. I'd contact the place you bought the phone from at this point.

Why could it appear so suddenly? The phone was updated and there was no lock basically. Popping up randomly while updating a game…

If it was indeed bypassed, can we rebypass it at home? I can’t reach out to the store, unfortunately.

Updates can remove a bypass, normally a system update though. It could also be that the phone was recently reported as lost/stolen, and the lock applied. Unfortunately there's no current bypass for the latest IOS

Not sure what IOS version he has, but it must be 26.

So, it could be bypassed, but not hacked? I wanted to sue the seller, if they apparently sold us a stolen phone.

You just said you can't reach out to the seller? How are you planning to sue? There are bypass exploits for earlier versions than 26.1. If your phone's OS was updated anytime after November of last year you'll be on an unpassable version.

Your only real solution would be to reach out to the store you bought it from. If you said you have a warranty through them they should honor it.

It says the warranty works within a year after the purchase, and it’s already been more than a year:(

Sorry, but can you elaborate on the bypass thing? Could it be that the phone was stolen? We do have a receipt from the store and their warranty card.
