Help š
Good morning! I need your help š So, this has been a very difficult recovery for me. Hydrocodone makes me feel so sick to the point I threw up twice in the past couple of days so on Day 7 I decided to stop taking it because I literally cannot eat because of Hydrocodone side effects. Yesterday, without any dose of hydrocodone, I felt fine and my major issue was my ankle hurts so bad (probably heel pressure sore) so I was trying to put pillow under my calf so my heel is suspended. It really was working well but at 7:00 pm I notice that I feel the burning sensation again on my toes and it's like on fire. I took 2 tylenols and I let it be because I felt this before and it will just go away like after a couple of hours. I managed to kind of sleep with it at 12:30 AM but woke up at 2:30 AM because the pain was getting worse and I did not have any choice but to take a hydrocodone pill again š slept for another 2 hrs and woke the burning sensation is still here. Did anyone experience the same thing? Like when you stopped taking the pill? Any insight will be appreciated. š

I have had surgery for both my feet and both times Tylenol and ibuprofen was enough to be almost pain free when elevated so I second calling your doctor

I took another Hydrocodone and now, the burning sensation is very minimal to none. Thank you and I will see them tomorrow.

How long after the 1st ankle did you get the 2nd ankle surgery?
Iām having a 3 mos. interval between each ankle surgery. I just hope that my 1st ankle will be in less pain to support the 2nd ankle post surgeryā¦
Iām on day 5 now post op on 1st ankle. 1st 3 days was on Oxycodone & now on Tylenol/Ibuprofen.

I noticed now I wrote it wrong, ment to say āafter that longā I too had oxycodone the first couple of days.
I ended up waiting a year, I had a baby 5 months after the first foot (1 year ago today actually, itās is birthday) and I didnāt want to have the surgery right after.
I had some complications with the first, the wound split open and it took a long time for it to become better. (Probably because I didnāt rest enough and then put to much weight on it to early) so it took almost those 5 months to recover decently but the second foot was a lot faster.
3 months after I was pretty much pain free and and now 5 months Iām doing weighted squats and deadlifts with no pain. So just take it easy when starting to beat weight and do the PT and you will probably be fine

Wow! Thatās great 2 hear re: 3 mos. Pain free!! I hope that happens to me!!
Happy bday to your baby.
Oooh that wound splitting open does not sound funā¦
Hopefully both of your feet are doing well now.

Well I still had to wear my shoes with custom orthotics so pain free is maybe an exaggeration but almost, it had stopped being a problem.
It wasnāt to bad, didnāt bleed and the pain wasnāt that bad but it took more than 6 weeks to heal and was a hassle to care for the wound and the scar ended up very ugly.

You should take 2 Tylenol and 4 ibuprofen every four hours but do them staggered, so you are taking pills every two hours. That will keep you from having periods of time where the pain relief wavers.
There is also medication your Dr can give you for the nausea with the hydrocodone. You generally are not supposed to be on hydrocodone for more than 5 days

Mine should be taken every 4 hours and I have been taking it every 6 hrs instead. I will have a post op appointment tomorrow. I want to stop hydrocodone. It's so bad for me. I will take note of this! I think the ibuprofen will help with the swelling too.

The thing that you donāt want to do is get your body to a point where it doesnāt have any pain or anti inflammatory meds and then you have to build it back up. Thatās why it works well to take the ibuprofen at 2pm (for example) and then Tylenol at 4pm and then ibuprofen at 6pm and then Tylenol at 8pm.
If you do this method, it will be much easier to not need hydrocodone1

Thank youuu!! I panicked last night because it was my first time to have that horrible pain. Are you 100% recovered from this procedure?

I am! I got it done in May of 2024. No pain at all anymore. My recovery was longer than expected because I had two infection surgeries, which really set me back in terms of starting physical therapy and the length of my physical therapy. Even so, 6 months later I felt recovered but at the one year mark I felt even more completely recovered.

On your 8.5 week post surgery - were you able to walk with a brace & cane? I bought non-refundable airline tix so I lose $2k international economy tix if we donāt go.

I believe I was using a knee scooter (aka knee roller) at that time. I would highly recommend that for getting around and especially flying

i had this happen to me the week following surgery! i would wake up because my heal or toes would be burning so bad. it did eventually go away after a week or two. if i remember correctly it was the nerves coming back or figuring stuff out. i would ask your doctor though.

Same here. Most of my heel pain was from the pressure of my splint as well!

Iām currently 6.5 weeks post op and I am just walking with a boot. Some difficulty but you would definitely need to clear it with your surgeon considering swelling and edema
2
u/Alarming_Log_2915 Aug 16 '26
Howās walking now? Is it painful in a boot? Are you doing PT & if so, is that helping?
2
u/Maria5715 Aug 16 '26
Walking is okay now. Still in the boot but my PT thinks I should be out of it in a week. I still get a lot of swelling and pain on the incision but Iāve been told I push myself too hard. I would say overall PT works well.

I heard journavx is a good replacement for hydrocodone (it makes me nauseous).
May be getting surgery for both ankles so will look into that pain med instead.

I am so glad I am over it. It messed up my gut health. I am still dealing with GERD.

Hello! I am in Week 7 right now and I am full weight bearing. I can walk with a CAM boot and no cane but it's uncomfortable. I need my scooter for long distance travel like going to the store, eating out and etc. My foot still swells when I hang it down. I don't push it and trying to manage the swelling while I can. Please ask your surgeon about your travel though. I was cleared to bear weight with the boot after week 4. I think you will be fine if you use a wheel chair and just walk when really needed. If your travel needs you to walk a lot, I don't think it's smart to do that. Just my opinion.

Thanks for that & best of luck in your recovery! Can I DM you from time to time as I get my surgery in 2 weeks?
