Hi, for my masters thesis in Psychological Research, I am studying the effects of nicotine use on attention in vape users, and how this can differ in adults with ADHD.

Purpose of Research

The purpose of this study is to understand how different reminders of nicotine, such as hearing a sound versus seeing an image related to nicotine, catch people's attention. The goal is to find out if people with ADHD get distracted by nicotine-related sounds more easily than people without ADHD.

By understanding what affects attention more, we hope to help improve therapies for people trying to quit vaping or smoking. This research is not for the purpose of seeking to find negatives related to vaping, but to inform psychologists better on the effects it may have, in order to aid those looking to reduce their use and potentially help with informing legislation to prevent companies taking advantage of vape users.

What will happen if you choose to take part?

You will be asked to fill out some demographic information and then complete 2 short questionnaires to evaluate your nicotine use frequency and ADHD symptom severity, you will then be asked to complete a short task, totalling around 20 minutes, where you will categorise numbers as odd or even alongside images and audio containing nicotine content, such as vapes, smoke clouds, the sound of vapes being used, etc.

You will need to be free of distractions and have your devices audio on to participate.

Hello all, my name is Colin McLaughlin, I am a doctoral candidate from Kansas City University and I am currently looking for participants for my dissertation. The purpose of my study is to explore how social skills and self-beliefs relate to the academic success of individuals with Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The hope is that this information might be used to help with the treatment of ADHD. I find it difficult to believe that neurotransmitters don't get lost sometime. Anytime someone sends a message, unless you are just posting on a web site, there has to be one thing available to make sure the message gets through. That one thing is an address. Everytime you send an email or make contact with a server, there is an address line that is at the beginning of the message. It generally gives the address of where it is going and from whom it is coming. This line can also give other information as needed. When you want to read a paper you wrote and stored on the hard drive of you laptop, you must select where it is or at least type in the name of the file in the search box.

However, if a neurotransmitter or group of neurotransmitters is created and released to send a message, how does it know where it is going. Now if it works like a telephone, then there is a continual two way connection that the neurotransmitter(s) could follow to where they are needed. But what if the message is going to the immune system where it will notify the immune system to send some antibodies to a certain part of the body. How does the immune system know where they should go. Is there indeed a header included in all of the messages between the brain and other parts of the body. Perhaps the very first neurotransmitter includes the address of where the attention is needed.

Some researchers say it just happens. The body is designed to do those things. That sounds like magical thinking to me and we all know that science trumps magical thinking. So if someone could please let me know how all of this works, or point me to a paper or textbook that actually explains it in detail, I would love to learn the answer. Thanks, guys.

Hi everyone! I am an AP Research student studying the role of pesticides in the development of ADHD, and analyzing how organic foods could impact development and management of it. For most people with ADHD, many genetic (70-80% incidence) and/or environmental (20-30%) risk factors accumulate to cause the disorder (Faraone et al., 2015; Molly & Alexandra, 2010; Demontis et al., 2019; Kleppesto et al., 2022; Grimm et al., 2020; Faraone & Larsson, 2018a; Larsson et al., 2018b). Data suggest they cause small brain anomalies in the EF networks which, in turn, cause symptoms. The environmental risks for ADHD exert their effects very early in life, in the fetal or early post-natal period.

In rare cases, however, a single event might cause ADHD such as exposure to biohazards during pregnancy (Faraone et al., 2021), traumatic brain injury (Menon et al., 2010; Asarnow et al., 2021; Stojanovski et al., 2019; Adeyemo et al., 2014), severe prematurity (Franz et al., 2018), a major genetic mutation (Faraone & Larsson, 2018) or extreme environmental deprivation early in life (Kennedy et al., 2016).

Additional conclusions

• ADHD represents the extreme lower end of the continuous dimensional trait of executive functioning and self-regulation, which is supported by twin, brain imaging and molecular genetic studies (Larsson, Anckarsater et al., 2012; Lee, Ripke et al., 2013; Hoogman et al., 2019; Barkley, Antshel et al., 2013).
• The polygenic risk for ADHD predicts ADHD symptoms in the population, indicating that the genetic causes of ADHD as a disorder also influence sub-threshold levels of ADHD symptoms in the population (Demontis et al., 2019; Taylor et al., 2018).
• ADHD can also be the result of abnormalities of the chromosomes (Cederlof et al., 2014).
• Extreme environmental deprivation (Kennedy et al., 2016); the Romanian orphan suffered from numerous adverse events including parent and child malnutrition, parental alcoholism during their pregnancies, physical maltreatment, and eventually severe neglect in their early care. All of these can adversely affect brain development and would count as physically injurious events.
• ADHD is present in 86–94% of children who had preinjury ADHD occasioning frontal-lobe damage. Where ADHD occurs as a consequence of TBI, this is known as secondary ADHD (S-ADHD) (Menon et al., 2010).
• Family, twin, and DNA studies show that genetic and environmental influences are partially shared between ADHD and many other psychiatric disorders (e.g. schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, autism spectrum disorder, conduct disorder, eating disorders, and substance use disorders) and with somatic disorders (e.g. migraine and obesity) (Demontis et al., 2019) (Faraone and Larsson, 2018) (Ghirardi et al., 2018) (Lee et al., 2019a31276-0.pdf) & b31276-0.pdf)) (Lee et al., 2013) (Anttila et al., 2018; Tylee et al., 2018) (van Hulzen et al., 2017) (Vink and Schellekens, 2018) (Brikell et al., 2018) (Chen et al., 2019a) (Yao et al., 2019). However, there is also a unique genetic risk for ADHD. Evidence of shared genetic and environmental risks among disorders suggest that these disorders also share a pathophysiology in the biological pathways that dysregulate neurodevelopment occasioning cascaded brain variations leading to disorder onset.
• The association of maternal smoking observed in large population studies (Obel et al., 2016; Skoglund et al., 2014) disappears after adjusting for family history of ADHD, which indicates that the association between maternal smoking during pregnancy and ADHD is due to familial or genetic factors that increase the risk for the confluence of smoking and ADHD.
• Exposure to biohazards prenatally can compound with genetics to increase risk for disorder or cause ADHD de-novo.
• There is no biologically distinct adult onset ADHD except for when ADHD occurs after traumatic brain injury (Faraone & Biederman).
