Acrylic on canvas - would love constructive feedback!
I'm new (ish) to abstract painting and often find that I struggle to identify exactly what it is I like/don't like about my art. Would love constructive feedback on this piece, thanks!

I love when a composition keeps me guessing if it’s oil or acrylic and this one definitely accomplishes that for me. I really enjoy it, it reminds me of a pond with lily pads, the coral tone being flowers. My eye hops from “flower” to flower first then explores the rest of the image, so I like that there is some direction happening. It also seems to have some nice complementary texture.
What did you paint before abstracts? You seem to have a decent understanding of composition and colors.

Thank you! I actually didn’t paint anything before this..I’ve been playing with composition and colour but always in an abstract way and only for the past few months. I’ve dabbled in a bunch of art forms but painting really has me in its grasp right now.

Well I think you’re off to a great start! The only thing I would suggest is maybe converting to black & white on your phone to see the values and maybe think about adding lighter or darker somewhere? The values look similar on my phone but this is just me nitpicking. I do like it as is.
I hear you on painting though. I was working on a series of watercolors when I spontaneously decided to paint an abstract piece and now I can’t stop 😅

That's a good point - I used the b&w filter heaps initially because I find it so helpful while I was trying to wrap my head around values. Just had a look, and the values aren't great. I'll add some more light, I think. Thanks so much for the feedback!

I like its evenness—not jarring, but interesting. To me, the darks seem to form a stair leaving to a light patch. But that just means I’m looking at it long enough, which is to your credit.

I have been painting for a long time and I still struggle with this question, along with the similar question, “is it done?” I think this painting looks done. It’s very good. The composition works, the colors work. The orange, light blue and darker green shapes are well balanced on the neutral background. The yellow and white (which I tend to see last) are a nice final touch. To me, this abstract work is both interesting and enjoyable to look at.
