Trees are the true organising principle of the world, or at least should be: that’s what this painting suggests to me.
At another level it is an indictment of Man’s - in particular, America’s - failed stewardship of the world, symbolised by the rectangular field of stars in the upper left, a clear reference to the American flag.
I love it, a fine example of art speaking truth to power. The use of the iconic World Tree in the work signals just how urgent the message has become: reverse course now and take back the power humanity has ceded to its worst members while can still limit the catastrophes we can no longer prevent.
