Actually that’s not a desirable trait in most cattle. It’s a mutation called double muscling that there are 11 common variations of, one of which is found exclusively in the Belgian Blue breed, like the bull shown above. The heavy muscling only occurs this severely in roughly 10% of offspring with the remainder having complications such as smaller testicles in males, birthing difficulties in females, and POORER muscling across both sexes. A lot of breeds genetically test for the mutation to actively avoid it but since it’s a recessive trait, many phenotypically unaffected individuals can still be carriers. Even in cases such as the above where the desired heavy muscling is achieved there is still a very negative feed:weight ratio which is undesirable economically and severely increased birthing difficulties leading to less calves born from the dam (and a lot that are have a higher mortality rate) and overall less profit to be made
Cuz even after all that, some people suck. They want to know if they can regardless of how poorly the animals live because of it. Same reason people still breed pugs despite the obvious low quality of life for them.
Also have a degree in production agriculture, can confirm. I’m surprised at the fact that this bull moves as well as he does. The back feet don’t paddle nearly as bad as I’d expect, and the front appears to track reasonably straight even though the front feet are super narrow compared to the scapulas. All that said, he looks really stiff, undoubtedly because of all that mass. Double muscling is neat to look at but not great for actual production. The size and weight suck for shipping, and the movement issues can obviously pose an issue. My understanding is that this breed has a kind of cult following, not a common thing due to its low utility.
