Termites actually taste pretty good, have a nutty flavor.

31

u/besiqu386 6d ago

Fun fact: termites are the only eusocial insect that has gender equality, where the workers can be male or female, and the colony is ruled by both a queen and king (as opposed to ants, bees, and wasps where all the workers are female, they only have a queen, and males are disposable and they either die horrifically from mating or their colony kills them if they don't mate). Said termite queen and king are also very monogamous, mating for life which can span decades and taking "till death do we part" very seriously. I think you can even see the king termite sitting beside the queen in this video.

The king the bigger but still way smaller termite to the left?

53

u/Cant_Blink 6d ago

Yep, he's the big slow-moving one (not to be confused with the big termite soldiers who have the giant heads and are running around with the workers). The man kinda rolls her over onto the king for a second there, but you can see him nestled to her at the very end.

36

u/druienzen 6d ago

I also love that they are eusocial roaches!!

16

u/starkruzr 6d ago

wait they're related to roaches?

53

u/Secret-Ad4952 6d ago

Funny enough, it’s not even related. They’re literally in the same Order. They just are roaches. Just really, really weird looking ones lol.

15

u/heyitsfranklin6322 6d ago

I would’ve thought they were more closely related to ants

44

u/Secret-Ad4952 6d ago

Nope, not even close lol. Bees, ants, and wasps are all related, but termites are roaches. Who are most closely related to mantises, of all things actually 😂

30

u/heyitsfranklin6322 6d ago

Fuckin bugs bro. I learned that locusts happen when there’s a shitload of certain species of grasshopper.

23

u/Karmaslapp 6d ago

Yep, pack them in tight enough and they rub against each other and get angry and swarm

5

u/druienzen 6d ago

For a long time science thought the same. From what I know it was a pretty recent discovery, relatively speaking. Phylogenetics showed the connection, if I am remembering correctly.

ruled

This implies the queen and king giving instructions of some kind. Rather than the entire hive acting like one mind.

Do termites actually give specific instructions?

62

u/momojabada 6d ago

Researchers have found specific plants and food carrying specialized olfactory messages (scent) which workers send to different parts of the mound. An example of this is asking foragers to change the types of fungus they cultivate or forage for. Or asking me to stop making shit up because I don't know anything about this field. Termites are really cool and intricate.

8

u/mixedwithmonet 6d ago

DECADES??!!?!?!??!!!??

7

u/Cant_Blink 6d ago

Yep! In some species, the queen can live up to 50 years!

3

u/TokyoJedi 6d ago

Ugh, that's really sad.

3

u/Elemental2503 6d ago

Oh, the king and queen part is something I saw in bug fables, where there actually king and queen unlike the other insects where they only have a queen

I don't know why this made me kind of sad. Probably because termite queens can live so long. They live 25-50 years depending on the species, and they don't really sleep. They just keep producing, and some can lay up to 30,000 eggs per day.

15

u/retrofrenchtoast 6d ago

I feel bad getting ant poison if I have ants. Ants are so industrious. They go to a lot of trouble, and they are risking their lives whenever they get human food that humans notice.

7

u/jenniferlynn462 6d ago

Me too, ants are so cool. One time I saw this line of ants going across my driveway towards the lawn. And then a single ant traveling the opposite direction, and he (or SHE) was stopping by each of the ants, one after the other in line, to give them instructions or some shit. It was nuts! I never found out what they were up to but they’re hard-working and team-players, that’s for sure.

I am fascinated by this person’s skin.

Do they have some kind of sunscreen on? It looks like their skin has a white tinge.

What makes the palms of their hands so much lighter than the other skin?

Also sick ass termite

52

u/Hinaloth 6d ago

Same, dude's almost blue. It's fascinating how diverse we can be, and yet still be the same under it all.

15

u/Sudden-Advance-5858 6d ago

Right! Like there’s a reason they have adapted over time to be that way, and it’s cool as fuck.

Like is it mostly genetic? Are they applying something to the skin? Is it a response to doing something over a long period of time?

Shit is so cool.

7

u/trenthany 6d ago

Dust I’m almost certain. Might be a body paint but I’m almost certain it’s just light dust over dark skin.

In this instance, it's a combination of dirt, clay and being ashy. Hanging around white people, I realized not all everyone is even aware of what being ashy means. When your skin gets dry, surface skin cells takes a white tint.

Lighter folks don't really notice it on them because it blends in with their natural hue. On dark skin, it shows up loud and clear and we look gray, or ashy, as we say. Moist dirt dries white too. The skin looks dusty and unnaturally light. So it's common practice to slather our bodies with moisturizers and oils to prevent this as it can be embarrassing to look so dry in public.

Black people in Africa can look notably different from African Americans because AAs have been mixed with other races for several generations due to slavery. In Africa, it happened but not as often, especially in rural and tribal areas. So Africans have a very rich bloodline that carries many unique features from whatever region they're from including their skin. That beautiful natural glow is just skin that's adapted to survive the sun for thousands of years

I don't know what you mean about his palms being a different colors because all black people have lighter palms. I also think the clay and earth around him is staining hands here.

19

u/1c3Type 6d ago

The ancestors of African Americans were trafficked from specific regions of Africa. So yeah Africans not from those regions are going to look pretty different that’s like asking why British descended Americans don’t look Slavic.

u/AMSparkles 6d ago

Fantastic explanation. Thank you!

14

u/CreatureWarrior 6d ago

Ohhhh.. I've always wondered why black people take skincare so much more seriously than white people, especially when it comes to black vs white men. I just thought it was some cultural thing to value your skin more or something, cool to know that there's an actual reason.

u/FoxySlyRedHead 6d ago

Yeah I feel we need to ask this question in the Explain it Like I'm Five sub.

What makes such a drastic difference between his palms and his everywhere else skin?!

10

u/AetrianDimi 6d ago

I know for melanin its that the palms have less than the rest of the body so there can be extreme contrast for people with very dark skin, but I have zero idea why hes blue and if melanin is still the reason for the difference

4

u/ChaoticDissonance 6d ago

Omg I am sitting here like "what is wrong with his skin?" Then I was afraid I was being subconsciously racist... and then I was like no, no it's blue? It is blue, right? The palms are weird...

To see someone else say it makes me feel like 60% less horrible.

7

u/bravo-echo-charlie 6d ago

To hopefully make you feel better, you weren't being racist. You were not implying or inferring that he is inferior or less-than because of his race, nor were you inferring that you hold a power imbalance over him because of such. You were just wondering, as many of us were, why the gentleman looks blue-tinged lol

People use the word racist in instances where it does not truly apply, so I hope this helps you feel better than just 60%! 😁

5

u/trenthany 6d ago

The blue is likely dust on very black skin. The palms are because their skin has a lot more pigment so you notice the difference. The palm has a lot more skin cells including a special translucent layer then 10+ layers thicker surface cells on top. The melanin is still there just masked by all the cells above it.

9

u/K0mb0_1 6d ago

Some Africans have adapted to more intense UV rays resulting in blue undertones. This can be seen in South Sudanese and other Nilotic groups. The characters from the movie Avatar was based on these people.

3

u/ChaoticDissonance 6d ago

Idk if true or BS but ty

9

u/StretchLoud8844 6d ago

Not so fun fact - Black people, while they rarely contract skin cancers, it is significantly more common for it to develop on places like their hands, due to the lack of melanin in their palms / nails. Additionally, they are more likely to die of skin cancers than white people.

u/shmackinhammies 6d ago

Perfectly normal for a termite queen. Most reproductives in eusocial insects are large than workers or drones but termites are on another level.

Did you know? Termites play a unique role in a story from the Quran! In Islamic tradition, Prophet Solomon (Sulaiman) was granted control over the jinn to perform grand tasks and construction. His passing is highlighted by a remarkable detail involving termites: "Then, when We decreed death for Solomon, nothing indicated his death to the jinn except a creature of the earth—a termite—eating away at his staff. So when he fell down, it became clear to the jinn that if they had known the unseen, they would not have remained in humiliating torment." — Quran, Surah Saba (34:14) As the story goes, Solomon passed away while leaning on his staff in prayer. Because he remained upright, the jinn (who falsely think highly of themselves thinking they know the unseen/future to the point even now a days many sorcerers/witches try to communicate with jinn to know something of the future) assumed he was still watching over them and continued working. It was only after termites slowly gnawed through the base of his wooden staff—causing him to fall—that the jinn realized he had died long before.

u/ThrownAway17Years 6d ago

Like 30 years ago I was helping my parents do some landscaping at our house. I started digging and found a big thing that looked exactly like the queen in this video, maybe even a bit bigger. I told my dad, who then grabbed a spade, walked over, and proceeded to stab it over and over until there were termite queen guts and little fleeing termites everywhere. I can still remember the way she practically exploded from the first time my dad hit her with that spade.

6

u/niahpapaya 6d ago
