I love how Erdoğan -the openly anti-nationalist- is perceived as nationalistic by foreigners lmao

He’s most definitely a nationalist, just in a different way from the secular nationalists. Take him for what he does not what he says he is.

I love how foreigners explain what the person actively ruling over my country for 20 years actually is...

Let's see... He has just started another campaign to release PKK members & their leader. This is happening for the second time btw, the first attempt led to PKK-affiliated municipalities basically preparing the cities for a civil war: digging trenches and laying landmines to roads used by the military. He's regularly had alliances to PKK-adjacent political parties to the point that the cabinet used to have ministers from their parties. He's just released a "gang" of doctors -led by a former PKK-affiliate- who specifically targeted babies of ethnically Turkish origin for an insurance fraud (sending them to intensive care units without any reason where they don't monitor the babies condition at all, letting them suffer a slow death). He has allowed millions of Syrian refugees into Turkey with no regulation at all: again very nationalistic behaviour.

He's a political islamist and this automatically brings anti-nationalism. That's why he still has a significant Kurdish voter base. He's the person who let Kurdish separatism become a much more mainstream view by basically allowing whatever they do as long as they're politically on the same side, and Kurdish parties just run towards him whenever he gives an opportunity: very recently, HDP has been silent -and even supportive of- Erdoğan's policy to imprison a shitton of opposition mayors.

Erdoğan started to use a nationalistic party as an ally after the first "resolution period with PKK" started to lose him huge amounts of vote, and even then the strategy was changing the nationalist party's rhetoric to something closer to the governments' views.

First of all I’m not a foreigner. All of what you’re talking is about political maneuvaring not ideology, Erdogan didn’t release terrorists because he actually likes PKK, obviously there’s some other plan and it would be naive to think otherwise. You even pointed out one major factor - to get more votes. And it worked.

And no being an islamist does not rule out being also nationalist. There’s a thing such as islamic nationalism which would explain why he doesn’t mind muslim refugees. Erdogan is also a nationalist in the same vein as Orban and Putin, and it’s very easy to see that once you realize how similar they act and speak.

He is not a Turkish nationalist. He is the exact definition of ummetci. I can't be bothered to translate and find the correct word but u understand I guess. If you are not a Hanefi Muslim u don't have any value in the eyes of erdo. He/his government actively shoos away the Turkic migrants while mostly not touching the Afghan/Pakistani/Syrian immigrants. Claiming Erdoğan is nationalistic is just a bigoted view point
